GNR: Chinese Democracy update (continued)

While it would be nothing short of awesome to have a proper GnR reunion with Axl, Slash, Duff, and Izzy (Steven Adler, I'm unsure about), I think don't think Axl's ego would ever allow that to happen.

In all honesty, is ANYONE expecting the album to be any good whatsoever? Really?
Any and all GnR product since (maybe even partially including) 1991 has been mediocre at best. Heck, even "Use Your Illusion" should have been 1 really good album instead of 2 OK ones. And "Shacklers Revenge" is abominably awful.
The wife saw the band live on tour about 2 years ago. They played a bunch of "new" material (although how much of it will end up on "Chinese Democracy", who knows...) and apparently it was just as awful as "Shacklers".
I don't think CD will end up being a Phantom Menace/Crystal Skull-sized disappointment in relationship to expectations, because I'm really wondering who is really harboring colossal sized expectations here.

November 25th is the rumor du jor. I have heard 9 of the tracks and I didn't like them at first. The more I listen the more I love. I didn't really like Use your Illusion 1 at first either.

I sort of agree with you on Use Your Illusion -- probably would have been better as a single album with all of the good songs. (I feel the same way about Metallica's Load and ReLoad.)
I also sort of like The Spaghetti Incident?, but I don't really consider it to be an actual GnR album. It's more of a novelty project than a full-fledged album.

The only problem with making Use Your Illusion one album is you HAVE to keep November Rain, Don't Cry, Coma, and Estranged. That's what 40 minutes right there? Most of the filler on the albums is shorter songs.
I've been listening to the leaked tracks for months now and I think they're as good as the UYI albums if you take out the 4 tracks listed above. It'll do about as well as Velvet Revolver did album sales wise and do better on the road.

I don't think it would have been unheard of to have a 70 minute GNR album back then. Extreme released III Sides To Every Story in 1992 and it was so long they couldn't even fit one of the tracks on the CD version. The cassette was something like 42 minutes a side.
I think they could have had a really strong 60-70 minute record. Just too much crap on those records.
Conversely, I remember getting the first two Saigon Kick albums at the time, which came out maybe a year apart. Probably had 30 total songs, and man they are almost all great.

I saw the new GNR 6 years ago (the last show before the tour was canceled) and was hoping to hear the album then. Now, not so much.
Also, does anyone really expected that date not to change?

More than a decade after its conception, Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" will finally see the light of day before year's end, sources close to the situation confirms to Billboard. As first reported here, the set will be a Best Buy exclusive and will be available Sunday, Nov. 23, rather than the usual Tuesday.
Beyond enticing pre-Thanksgiving shoppers, the move is tied to the structure of Best Buy's sales week, which runs from Sunday to Saturday. As such, "Chinese Democracy" would not be eligible to chart on The Billboard 200 until the week of Dec. 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In the run-up to release date, album track "Shackler's Revenge" will debut in the video game "Rock Band 2," while a portion of "If the World" is playing over the end credits in the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film "Body of Lies."
In addition, GNR's seminal 1987 debut, "Appetite for Destruction," will be reissued on vinyl on Oct. 28 via Interscope.
The band's last new studio albums were the simultaneously released "Use Your Illusion I" and "II" in September 1991. A covers set, "The Spaghetti Incident?," followed in 1993, and featured some of the last GNR recordings from original guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan.

If that's where their songwriting strengths were at the time, so be it.

That's probably pretty close to what I would do, although I never really liked Civil War - chorus just seems like a warmed over version of their Knockin' On Heaven's Door cover. I might put Breakdown in its place.

I didn't include it because 1) it's a ballad and 2) it has been overplayed. I don't care if I ever hear it again. Good song or not. "Estranged" is also a ballad, but far from overplayed.
