I think that perhaps my expectations were a little too high as upon first listen, its a little disappointing. Nothing really sticks out. I guess that I've just missed Portishead more than I thought.

Not worth the 10+ years wait but still great nonetheless!

After a couple listens I'm really liking it. "The Rip" might be my favorite track.

Just curious. On my copy, the first song, Silence has a fairly abrupt ending. Is that how it ends or is it just my copy?

i'm listening to it now, for the first time. i can hear what most of you are describing as "underwhelming". no tracks have really stood out for me, but i definitely like what i hear. most of it's like a revved up version of beth's solo album.

God how I wanted to love this album right off the bat, like Dummy. "Underwhelming" is probably putting it lightly. I was expecting them to revisit their trip hop roots, but instead it's more your average electronic album. In that respect, it's definitely a "grower."

Then again, "underwhelming" was my first reaction to The National's Boxer and that ended up being favorite album last year. Go figure.

Same here, I think the album is fantastic.

As much as I love their previous material, I'm really glad they didn't put out another "Dummy" or "Self-Titled".

After almost 12 years without new Portishead material, I love seeing them mature/grow as artists, rather than just throw out rehashes of old songs.

I don't think we'll know for sure until the CD comes out.

I find this album pretty boring, especially compared to how long they had to prepare for this album. They also put a great boring video for Machine Gun, good job guys. This is pretty much sounding just like an extension of her solo album. There really aren't memorable songs, they should of just stucked with the triphop formula that worked instead of trying to make things sound more organic. It will probably grown on me though anyways.

I'm glad they changed it up a bit, another Dummy or self titled album not only would have been the very definition of boring but would have been instantly dated.

Let's face it, electronic music has changed quite a bit in the last ten years and a retread would not have served their legacy well.

I think the jury is still out on whether or not its a great album, but kudos to them for trying to keep moving forward.

I was taken aback as well upon hearing it. I wasn't sure I had the right download. I was hoping for a updated sound and all but this was not what I was expecting. I LOVED the first two from the first listen and this made me want to turn it off.

It might well be something I'll come to appreciate more as I listen to it but yuck was my first reaction. I'm glad I downloaded it instead of a blind buy.
It's probably all the anticipation and it's SO different from the first two.

I need to listen again and just pretend it's a band I've never heard of and see if I can get into that way. I'm not sure a challenge is what I want from them but then again those are sometimes the albums that end up being my favorites.

looks like they'll be offering a limited edition box set of the album for ~$80.00, directly from their site: linky.

i might bite, but i sure wish it included a CD too, rather than just media of the past, and media of the future...

Is anyone picking it up today? I've been listening to it nonstop the past few days and it's growing on me. The Rip is my favorite.

It ends abruptly on the album, as well.

Upon first listen, I was really disappointed with this long-awaited offering. But I was really tired during that initial listen, so I thought that maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. So, I've since listened to it a couple more times and it is growing on me. Not every song is a knockout, but I think that there is some truly great stuff on there.

I still haven't checked our Beth's solo album; I guess maybe this gives me a reason, too.

I've always been a casual fan of Portishead, so I wasn't even anticipating this album as much as some of you. I really like it. There are a couple of standout tracks for me (Hunter, The Rip) and only a couple duds (Nylon Smile, Deep Water), while the rest of the album is pleasing to my ears. I'd give it a solid B/B+.

This album is wildy cool. I love it. At different moments I can hear Suicide, Wire (the 80's version) and even freakin' Deep Purple. It can be so weird, but wonderful at the same time. I'll be getting some play out of this (welcome back!).

I am enjoying it so far, but I haven't warmed up to it as quickly as I did when I first purchased Dummy in 1995

I had a complete change of heart on this one. I went from thinking it was a mediocre, disappointing release to a completely devastating, career-defining masterpiece.
