I can't find a good reference for release years to help me out with this. Any suggestions? I'm blurry on what came out in what year.

Thanks.

I did something like search "top albums of 19XX" in Google and the result was invariable something at rateyourmusic.com. Usually you get a list of 25 albums or so but those lists are pretty good.

1999 was an incredible year for music and film. Maybe not the best year in quality, but I think the (to crib Tricky's phrase) pre-millenium tension had artists come out the woodwork and try and do something.

1990 : Alice In ChainsFacelift / The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker (tie)

Wow, this is where it gets really really tough. Of the appox. 650 albums I own, roughly a third were released between 1991 and 1995. But I'm gonna try to limit myself to no more than 3 albums per year.

1991 : SoundgardenBadmotorfinger / Pearl Jam - Ten / Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog (tie)
1992 : Alice In ChainsDirt / Various Artists - Singles Soundtrack / Stone Temple Pilots - Core (tie)
1993 : Smashing PumpkinsSiamese Dream / Counting Crows - August and Everything After / Nirvana - In Utero (tie)
1994 : LiveThrowing Copper / Pearl Jam - Vitology / Nirvana - Unplugged / Soundgarden - Superunknown (tie) ok, it's 4 for this year.
1995 : Mad SeasonAbove / Pink Floyd - Pulse / The Presidents of the United States of America - Self Titled (tie)
1996 : Alice In ChainsUnplugged / Sublime - Sublime (tie)
1997 : EverclearSo Much for the Afterglow / Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape (tie)
1998 : Pearl JamYield
1999 : Chris CornellEuphoria Morning / Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

Wow, we must have really similar tastes, at least for that decade. That's how I'd rate those years as well and I still listen to all those albums to this day.

Also I'd go with
1994 : Live - Throwing Copper, Toadies - Rubberneck

Both excellent choices, as well. I'd also add Bush - Sixteen Stone to the list for '94 - as it came out very late that year, but really didn't "hit" until '95.

Just for laughs and similarity sake, here's some of my other back up choices from '95 to '98

1995: Goo Goo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo, Oasis - What's The Story (Morning Glory), Radiohead - The Bends, Better Than Ezra - Deluxe, Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters

1996: Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music From The Vatican Gift Shop, The Verve Pipe - Villians, Tonic - Lemon Parade, Better Than Ezra - Friction Baby

1997: Radiohead - OK Computer, Our Lady Peace - Clumsy, Black Lab - Your Body Above Me

1998: Semisonic - Feeling Strangely Fine, Superdrag - Head Trip In Every Key, Fastball - All The Pain Money Can Buy

Alright, I'm coming to you if the hard drive I've got all my CDs ripped to blows up and the CDs themselves are stolen. You just named a sizable chunk of my "go to" music. God damn it.

1990: (NOTHING)
1991: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
1992: Stone Temple Pilots - Core
1993: The Cranberries - Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?
1994: Live - Throwing Copper
1995: Radiohead - The Bends
1996: Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup
1997: Radiohead - OK Computer
1998: Totoise - TNT
1999: Matthew Good Band - Beautiful Midnight

I spent more time on 1990 than on the others combined and still couldn't find a thing.

Most of this looks like what other people have posted, but these are my favorites.

1993 & 1997 were brutal because of the number of great releases.
