Cool idea I wanna play. Tough to pick just 1 but if we're going by favorites at the time its like this:

1980: Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July
Queen - The Game
1981: Billy Joel - Songs In The Attic; if we're talking only new material: The Police - Ghost In The Machine
1982: Michael Jackson - Thriller
1983: The Police - Synchronicity
1984: Run-DMC - Run-DMC
1985: Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
1986: Beastie Boys - License To Ill
1987: Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full
Guns N Roses - Apetite For Destruction
U2 - The Joshua Tree
1988: Slick Rick - The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
1989: Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
LL Cool J - Walking With A Panther

The '80's were such a great time for music I had to exclude some of my favorite albums of all time to whittle this list down.

Indeed it does! Actually I was watching last week that same performance you posted from youtube. I still feel that album is somewhat underrated because a lot of older fans thought Killing Joke were becoming too mainstream. Bunch of nonsense. Chessboards, Adorations, Love Of The Masses, it goes on. Most mainstream groups wish they could write tunes that good.

Yeah, and I guess my tastes are more mainstream, which is why I like this era of Killing Joke. I find a lot of their earlier stuff a bit too harsh and atonal for my taste, and some of their later stuff a little too heavy and proto-metal/industrial. But in that Fire Dances/Night Time/Brighter than a Thousand Suns period, Geordie's guitar was a bit cleaner, more new-wavey sounding, Jaz sang instead of growling and screaming, and they had some nice clean keyboards on there---IMO it really allowed their unique melodies and song structures to come through loud and clear. And yes, the songwriting on BTATS was really masterful.

I'm a big Killing Joke fan, and you guys are right. The girlfriend of mine that actually turned me on to them around 1987 was in the midst of abandoning them as a fan because she thought Brighter was a sell-out. It's my favorite album of theirs.

I contend that much of the music after 1978 is very "'80s" in that it was at the forefront of a new wave in music (no pun intended) that epitomized the '80s music style to many.

I don't know of any source that would list all releases for a year, but it would probably take several hours of reading each year...

you might find something useful at Rocklist.net or Timepieces , or metacritic (for 2000 & after).
