I wouldn't call Ayreon a "group". Its a brainchild of Arjen Lucassen that he brings in a bunch of guest singers and musicians on. Similar to Toby Sammet's Avantasia, but much better IMO. And its definitely not "power" metal.

Okay Mr. Nitpick. I said they shared themes with Power Metal. Enough that I think some people who like Power Metal would like them and vice versa. I'll keep calling them a group, since multiple musicians and singers are used and also contribute on multiple Ayreon albums.

Yeah they definitly went into a different direction with Gutter Ballet, still its my favorite albums of the last 20 years.
I love Helloween and King Diamond too.

OK, fine, but its still nothing like "power" metal.

I guess if Iced Earth can be called a "group" with all the different members its had, so can Ayreon.

Finland is a great spot for power metal for some reason. Along with Stratovarius (their leader, the guitarist, had a Britney Spears-like meltdown, and almost as severe, too. The lyrics to 'Maniac Dance' document it) and Nightwish there's:

Poisonblack: Check out the track 'Rush' on Pandora or Last.fm

Twilightning: Some good songs, a lot like Strat.

Also:

Lanfear: from Germany, got their name from Jordan's Wheel of Time.

Kamelot: British band

Firewind: Greek metal band with a great guitar player. My favorite song on the new album, 'The Premonition', is called 'Circle of Life.'

That should keep you plenty busy.

I love these guys. I really liked their original singer, Stephen Fredrick, but everyone who's been in the band is really good - and Gus G. is a fantastic guitar player and songwriter. This is Power Metal with class!

Firewind is a great band.

I've been checking out your videos of Firewind, they sound really good.
Are they American? If I were to try out a few of their cd's which ones would
be their better ones to buy?
By the way I just bought Anvil- Hard N Heavy, and Metal on Metal plus another The Answer cd tonight so it may be a while before I have the funds to check them out, but I will at some point.

Re: What are some good Power Metal bands?

This is one of my least favorite genres of metal, but I can tolerate small amounts of Iced Earth and HammerFall.

Definitely agree with mndtrp, this is one of my least favorite genres of metal. Suprisingly I do like Symphony X, totally amazing stuff.

FWIW Gus G. is Ozzy's new guitar player replacing Zakk Wylde.

Re: What are some good Power Metal bands?

most of the power metal bands I know are listed already, but I'll add Tad Morose, from Sweden.
also, Kotipelto (the Stratovarius singer's side project)

Sonata Arctica is amazing, except their last couple of albums have kind of sucked.
