U2: Joshua Tree (20th Anniversary) -11/20/07
One of the more interesting release news is the reissue of Joshua Tree (1987) from U2 by their label, Island Records. The album is being remastered and hopefully signals the beginning of an extensive overhaul of the U2 Catalogue, especially the earlier stuff. Joshua Tree is a good start. This planned reissue will release as a standard CD, a double LP, a 2CD Deluxe Edition, and a 2CD/1DVD Deluxe Edition – upgrade time. These gems are expected on November 20. Keep an eye on these pages for more info as I get them.

20 years.....geez, do I feel old.

ahh yes! this is exactly what i've been waiting for! now i can stop trying to find excuses to pony up for the MFSL copy :)
u2 re-releases & dvds have all been really great. i can't wait to see what this will be like! please keep the thread up-to-date. |
Looking forward to this. The DVD will feature a live show from the JT tour somewhere in Europe. I can't find the link, but I'm not certain if it will be a complete show or a truncated version. Maybe Chrisedge will pop in soon with some more info...

I have a MFSL copy of "Joshua Tree," so it'll be hard to improve on the sound quality, but I'll still pick up the 2CD/1DVD edition for whatever extras there are.

I saw this on this thread on SteveHoffman.tv forums. A very interesting post talks about how The Joshua Tree could have been planned as a double album using many of the B-Sides from the singles. See post here . The tracklisting (which could fit on one CD) could have been:
Side A: Where The Streets Have No Name Silver And Gold (Studio Version) I Still Haven't Found... Spanish Eyes With Or Without You Luminous Times Walk To The Water Bullet The Blue Sky Running To Stand Still Side B: Red Hill Mining Town Race Against Time In God's Country Trip Through Your Wires Sweetest Thing One Tree Hill Deep In The Heart Exit Mothers Of The Disappeared |

Any idea what the second CD in the 2CD set has over the original? |

If you guys haven't yet seen the VH1 Classic Classic Albums for the Joshua Tree you really are missing out. It's a great 1 hr. doc on the writing and recording of the album. There's this funny line where Edge says "so that's how I played that part".

looking forward to this release - one of those albums that only gets better and better. |
When this album came out I almost didn't want to hear it because I was so burned out on U2 (working college radio and hearing cover bands play their stuff). After two listens I was transfixed. It is still my favorite recording of all time. "In God's Country", "Exit", "Red Hill Mining Town"... holy crap that's good non-single material.

Red Hill Mining Town is prolly my favorite song on that album.

Also, I had this weird bootleg version of this album back in the day with two extra songs on it (one about white canvas shoes...) anyone know what that is? Let's hope they don't do a simple "jack up the loudness and compress dynamic range" reengineering job. I really like how this album sounds now. I also feel old. This was the first CD I remember buying. I played in constantly on my Discman D100, trying not to jostle it. Those things would skip if you breathed on it. |

I already own the album on both CD and vinyl, but if the sound really is that much better, it might be worth it for a big enough fan like myself. |

I'm going to listen to this tomorrow. |
Wow, great news... But I feel old...
|
I have the cassette, but never upgraded it to CD (came close many times), so I'm in.
And, yes, I feel old, too. |

To celebrate the 20th birthday of its landmark album "The Joshua Tree," U2 is reissuing the set in four different incarnations on Nov. 20 via UMe. The album will be available as a remastered single CD, a 2-CD set, a 2-CD/1-DVD collectible box and a double-vinyl package. The single-disc will be housed in a jewel case, but the 2-CD set comes in a hard back case. The 2-CD/1-DVD version has a base and lid to accommodate the discs as well as five portfolio prints. Band members have contributed new liner notes for the package. Of most interest to fans is the inclusion of rare material on the expanded editions. Although details have yet to be announced, "Joshua Tree" demos, alternate versions and B-sides from the period are expected to appear. The DVD is understood to comprise a July 4, 1987, show at the Paris Hippodrome, as well as the documentary "Outside It's America." Produced by Brian Eno, "The Joshua Tree" shot U2's commercial fortunes into the stratosphere. The album's first three tracks were huge singles, with both "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 BILLBOARD.com |
I definately plan on getting the 2CD/1DVD set when this comes out! Hey... does anyone know if they have a U2 video retrospective on iTunes. Foo Fighters has one with 14 videos for $12.99, and I was hoping U2 would have something similar. (I have the DVD video collections - but I wanted something I could put on my iPod.
