You're forgiven.

I guess that's where we agree to disagree, 'noid.

I'm not asking for advice. I'm not asking for anything other than what songs you guys dig with that theme I've chosen in mind.

I'm got the CD design layed out out, with my own art work. I have the theme already picked out. I've got 4/5ths of the song selections chosen, with no guarantee that I will even include any of the songs suggested.

This is a new generation, and "back in the day" when mixtapes were the only format, and even in the early days of CD the format, the internet wasn't around to use for one's advantage.

Just trying to see what else is out there before I commit the songs to CD.

I guess I'll be a rogue CD-mixer, without a license to mix. I could live with that However, I am glad you don't make the rules regarding mixtaping.

EDIT: Btw, I was really asking for song suggestions, and not advice on the "situation".

Yeah. Nice abbreviated song title on the Prince tune.

You can't really go wrong with a BBD song, can you? They fit all sorts of occassions. If things were to go sour, then I can make another mix CD and include "Poison," by them. Ha!

Btw, I've actually karaoke'd to "Do Me". Can't say I really nailed it. (not sure if that was a pun.)

Have you tried early Nirvana? I believe Polly kicked off the last mix tape that got a dude laid circa 1993.

If you try to be cool, you won't be cool. You're either cool or you're not cool. Just pick songs that you dig and that have meaning for you. Don't let someone else tell you what's cool and what's not. That's a sure fire recipe for disaster.

Sorry, I hadn't read page two when I wrote that. In short, I agree with what a bunch of people already said on this topic.

Wow.

Ok.

I guess it doesn't bare repeating that I already have most (4/5ths of the songs) chosen on my own. I've said this before. Some of them have made their way on a mix CD I've done before. Some are songs I've always dug. Some are songs I've discovered in the past year that I've really resonated with. I was just looking for a select few songs out there that people can recommend me to me. To me, it's similiar to coming across new music other ways, like going to a used CD shopping and taking a buttload of CDs up to the listening counters. (Which I do a lot.) Or reading a review online, or in a music mag, and making a purchase at Best Buy based on what I've read.

Of course I am not going to put these songs on a mix CD simply because they're considered cool by someone else. I'd listen to them. Which I have done with a few so far, and if like them enough to think "wow, this song is awesome...never heard it before, but it's definitely cd mix worthy", I would entertain putting it on.

And lastly, I'm lookin for a mix CD that "exudes cool", I'm not trying to come off as cool. I think my personality has been cemented long ago in this person's eyes. I'm not really trying to change it.

I think what this thread has done has inspired some people to check out suggestions made by other people. Some of the songs may do nothing for me. Others might rock me like a hurricane. If other people have checked some of the songs out, and found some to be winners for them, then that's great. I think this thread would've served some purpose.

I've seen countless of threads suggesting music, and other threads contain suggested music for a certain type of mood ("Truly Beautiful Music" and "Songs that Move You to Tears" -- I'm paraphrasing that one, come to mind). This is simply another thread to suggest music with a purpose.

Anyway, I think I have enough suggestions right now. It's all I really wanted. Wasn't too interested in the commentary. Thanks, anyway. And thanks again to all those who suggested some good tunes without thrusting any negative comment towards the intent.

if you really want to impress her, just give her your 20 favorite songs. if she doesn't dig them run, if she does, then you're already a perfect match.

You don't see how a mix tape that YOU made reflects on YOU? In other words, you're trying to divorce the "coolness" of your tape from the "coolness" of yourself and that simply can't happen. The tape will "exude cool" only if you pick songs that you yourself feel deliver that impression. There is no objective standard for what's cool and what isn't. If you try and force it by asking for advice on what's cool and what isn't, it's almost a certainty that the result won't be cool at all.

No, I see your point.

But what I don't think is coming across is that I'm creating the overall aesthetic of it. It (the cd) most definitely will reflect the essensce of who I am. If there's a song I see thrown around in here, and I like it, then that's part of who I am.

Sometimes songs on their own sound pretty cool. Sometimes songs, when they're part of a conglomerate of songs, fit a vibe...

Of course a CD I make reflects on me. But I'm not worried about whether it makes me cool. I was looking for a cd that compromises an overall, cool vibe.

I feel like there's a piece missing and I'm just hoping to unearth that rare, gem of a song that might've alluded me thus far. (There's tons, I'm sure. I'd be happy to come across one.)

I make tons of mix CDs, for myself and for other people. My friend Heather is getting married, and she asked me to make her a CD fully of "lovey-dovey" songs for her wedding. She's hoping that I'll come up with their "wedding" song, too...first dance, etc...

Sometimes I find myself always putting the same song on every mix. Then I get bored of it.

As for THIS mix cd, most every single song will be something I picked. I still fail to see how asking what other people dig, listening to it myself, and think "hey, this is a really chill song. i think it'll fit nicely on MY cd." detracts from the "coolness" aesthetic of the CD. It's still my essence. If I like a song that someone recommends, then it becomes part of what *I* like. It's still my essence onto the CD. Haven't you ever been introduced to a song by someone else, liked it so much, and eventually put it on someone's CD before?

Well, more than anything, the discussion I brought was for the sake of conversation. Any chance...and I mean ANY chance...I get to come across new music -- music reviews, cd stores where i can listen to music before purchasing, friend recommendations, other people's mixes, listening to audio links or mp3s online, internet radio, satellite radio -- I relish it. I do so much of that on my own and, to me, asking what other people like is no different.

This CD is not going to be done tomorrow. I'm going to take my time. Other than the music I have in my collection (and trust me, I have a lot), I'll probably be searching around for a song or two that's new to me. I want to discover something new to add to this mix.

Just thought I'd ask for suggestions in case anything stood out. Plain and simple. Nothing will go onto the cd JUST because someone else thinks it's cool. I figured it would go without saying that if I liked it a lot and thought it would fit the CD as a complimentary song to all the other songs that I included myself, fits the flow of the CD -- in the process making the overall aesthetic of the CD stronger -- then it's something I'm comfortable with.

I do not think whatsoever that it compromises the integrity or intent of the CD.

Pick YOUR favorite songs, and put 'em on the disc. Simple as that...

P.S. Add "Nemo" by Nightwish...

There's so much that strikes me as completely un-cool on the list above that I think Aphex Twin and I must have drastically different taste in music.

So instead of debating the "coolness" of creating a mixtape out of other peoples recommendations and disqualifying other people's choices, how's abouts you provide some suggestions yourself?

I stand by my Heartless Bastards recommendation.

Also:

LCD Soundsystem "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House"
Arcade Fire "Rebellion (Lies)"
De la Soul "The Magic Number"
Tom Waits "Temptation"
David Bowie "Lady Grinning Soul"
Beatles "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"
The Cardigans "I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to Be Nicer"
Aretha Franklin "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"
Hank Williams "Jambalaya (on the Bayou)"
R.E.M. "Catapult"
The Smiths "Girlfriend in a Coma"
Menomena "Wet and Rusting"

Geez, I could keep going indefinitely.

So, how'd this work out? Did the mix get done? What songs did you settle on?

(Who wants to provide the "ba dum bum" after the following joke that is sure to be posted by any alert reader of my post?)
