Same for me except for age and location of course. I also dig Areosmith and Lynyrd Skynyrd

The bulk of my music is either rock/metal based, like prog, industrial, etc. So I would expect people are surprised when they see stuff like Seal and Enigma in my collection, which are actually two of my favorites.

I'm 28 and most people are surprised that I listen to more 50's and 60s music than today's.

Most people are surprised when I tell them I mostly listen to podcasts. That may be because most people don't know what they are though.

I had to think hard about what would be weird since everything I like seems "normal" to me. Then it hit me. Easy listening music. I can really get off on instrumental light music at times. Esquivel is one of my favorites, but I'm talking about stuff that doesn't have his goofy qualities.

The comment about listening to Green Day at 46 sort of threw me for a loop.
I'm 43 and love American Idiot. Maybe there will be a day I'll think of myself as odd for listening to heavy rock music, but I doubt it.

I'm more surprised when I find out what people don't listen to: namely, that their musical tastes are so surprisingly narrow.

The only music I don't seek out more is usually metal or what I call "hippie" music: your Deep Banana Blackout, Phish, etc. Although I've got music in these genres, but it's a tiny fraction of what I have.

Yeah, that statement make me chuckle to myself in a sympathetic manner. Heavy rock's been around for 40 years now - you could be in your 50s and still have that being the music you grew up loving. It's not like you hit a certain age, and are only allowed to enjoy easy listening from that point on.

I remember getting a shocked look from a cashier when buying a Nine Inch Nails CD a few years back. Probably because I looked like a nerdy academic, and not a goth.

Yeah, but "real" hippie music, like Forever Changes or Surrealistic Pillow is fantastic.

I've got Love Story (1966-1972) (which contains all of Forever Changes) as well as Surrealistic Pillow.

I don't know if Liege & Lief or Pink Moon or Skip Spence's Oar are considered to be in the same group, but I've got those too.

I meant I'm not a fan of the long, meandering output of a lot of these bands.

Everyone likes three groups that they "shouldn't". I usually like jazz, jambands, funk, and hiphop, but I dig SWV, Boys II Men, and Ani.

As my friend Kendrick would say, "Weak" was a hood classic. I imagine if you like that song, you'd also be partial to Jade's "Don't Walk Away"...
