Winehouse family tried to have Amy sectioned

Last Updated: 5:37pm GMT 24/01/2008

The family of Amy Winehouse have revealed they considered having the troubled singer sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Her father Mitch said he had looked at taking the dramatic step to help his daughter battle her drug problems - but authorities said it wasn't possible.

Speaking on Vanessa Feltz’s BBC London radio show, Mr Winehouse said: "Obviously this is something that we have looked at. What you have got to understand is that Amy is nowhere near being in a position to be sectioned. She really has to be a danger to herself.

"You might consider taking drugs is a danger to herself, but unfortunately the authorities don't."

The news comes after a video emerged this week of the 24-year-old singer apparently smoking crack at her London home.

Mr Winehouse said the video, obtained by The Sun, was "horrible".

He added that his daughter’s denial over her condition was hindering her recovery.

He said: "Part of the problem is she doesn't think she's got a problem," he said.

"She thinks she can do what she does recreationally and get on with the rest of her life," he said.

"The moment she says she wants to go into a facility, within half an hour she will be in a facility. But unless she wants to do it of her own accord, it's pointless.

"You can't lock the key and say, 'you can't come out before you're better'. That's called abduction."

Winehouse is planning to appear at the Grammys in Los Angeles next month, where she has been nominated for six awards.

But first she will need to obtain a visa - last October she was arrested and fined in Norway for possession of cannabis and is currently not allowed to enter the United States.

Mr Winehouse insisted she was wrongfully arrested and said: "Because she has a drugs conviction, at this moment in time she can't go into the States.

"We are working to rectify that and it will be rectified within the next week or so. We are working on it to be able to go to the Grammys."

I personally wouldn't call this mental illness, I say it's sheer stupidity on her part, she's an addict plain and simple, and it's video like this that doesn't help her in the slightest. She maybe talented but she thrives on her problems/drug addiction.

LONDON - Amy Winehouse, beset by allegations of substance abuse, entered a rehabilitation facility Thursday to battle drug addiction. The announcement came just days after the 24-year-old singer was pictured in British tabloid The Sun inhaling fumes from a small pipe. Police have launched an inquiry into the matter.

"Amy decided to enter the facility today after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors," Universal Music Group said in a statement.

"She has come to understand that she requires specialist treatment to continue her ongoing recovery from drug addiction," the statement said.

"Amy is the most talented and important musical artist of her generation and has made huge strides on her road to recovery," the statement said.

Universal said it hoped Winehouse would "come back to full health and fulfill her incredible potential with the label."

The statement also indicated Winehouse still planned to attend and perform at the Grammys, to be held Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.

She canceled a scheduled appearance Saturday at the NRJ music awards ceremony in France, Universal said.

According to The Sun, video of Winehouse apparently using drugs was shot before she attended a court hearing to see her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, appear on charges of assault and lying to police.

Winehouse was photographed walking outside her London home last month wearing only a bra and jeans, with no shoes, looking distressed.

Umm...yeah...I don't know about all of that, but it's a good thing she's finally getting help. Maybe this time it'll stick?

I know. I almost made a comment about that silly quote (and I really like her music).

Amy Winehouse denied visa, won't be at Grammys
LONDON, England (CNN) -- British singer Amy Winehouse will not perform at the Grammy Awards as planned, because she has been denied a visa to enter the United States, according to a statement Thursday.

Winehouse, who is being treated for drug addiction, was invited to the Sunday event in Los Angeles, California, after being nominated in six categories, said the statement from the singer's British publicists.

"Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London," the statement said.

"Amy has been progressing well since entering a rehabilitation clinic two weeks ago and although disappointed with the decision, has accepted the ruling and will be concentrating on her recovery.

"Amy has been treated well and fairly by the embassy staff, and thanks every one for their support in trying to make this happen," the statement said. "There will of course be other opportunities and she very much looks forward to visiting America in the near future."

Winehouse entered the rehabilitation clinic January 24 after the leak of a home video that showed her smoking something in a glass pipe, just minutes after she is heard saying she had taken six tablets of the anti-anxiety drug Valium.

The Sun, Britain's best-selling daily tabloid newspaper, made the 19-minute video public, saying it had been shot days earlier at Winehouse's East London home.

In a two-minute portion of the video posted on The Sun's Web site, Winehouse walks around her home in a dark tank top, talks to a friend on her cell phone, and talks to the person shooting the video. At one point, she says, "I just took about six Valium."

Sitting on her bed, she then lights a glass pipe and inhales. What was in the pipe was unknown. Watch the video of Winehouse and a glass pipe »

Scotland Yard has said it is looking into the the video after receiving it from The Sun.

Winehouse has become famous for her battles with addiction. Her hit song "Rehab" describes her reluctance to enter a rehabilitation center. She previously entered rehab last summer.

In October, Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested at a Norwegian hotel for marijuana possession, and soon afterward fans booed her on stage as she slurred and stumbled her way through her set.

In December, tabloids published pictures of Winehouse with a mystery white powder in her nose. She was also photographed wandering barefoot on a London street, wearing only jeans and a bra and appearing disoriented.

Fielder-Civil is currently behind bars in London on charges of perverting the course of justice following a bar fight.

Winehouse's parents have publicly expressed concern that their daughter is succumbing to the pressures of fame.

Winehouse's Grammy nominations include record and song of the year for "Rehab" and best album for "Back to Black."

24 years old what a waste.

On June 22, 2008 Mitch Winehouse reported that his daughter had been diagnosed with the early stages of emphysema, due to her chain cigarette smoking and crack cocaine usage. Mitch Winehouse reported that doctors cautioned that she has nodules in her chest, 70 percent lung capacity and an irregular heartbeat, which threaten not only her voice but jeopardizes her life.[

Soul diva Amy Winehouse has damaged her lungs by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes, her father said in an interview published Sunday.

The Sunday Mirror quoted Mitch Winehouse as saying that Amy has an early stage emphysema and an irregular heartbeat, and has been warned that she will have to wear an oxygen mask unless she stops smoking drugs.

"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse was quoted as saying.

"There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She has 70 percent lung capacity."

Winehouse collapsed at her north London home Monday after signing autographs for a group of fans and was taken to a London hospital for tests. She remained there all week.

She is still scheduled to sing at a concert in London on Friday celebrating 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela, the South African Nobel Prize-winner, and plans to take part in the Glastonbury music festival the following day.

Mitch Winehouse said it would be good for his daughter to perform.

"When she's been inactive work-wise then that's when the problems really start. The doctors have said that medically there isn't any reason why she can't do Glastonbury," the paper quoted him as saying.

He also pleaded with her drug taking friends to stay away from her.

"What hope does she have if people are taking drugs around her," he said.

She's lived about 45 years in 23.

Doctors give verdict on stricken singer

Jun 23, 2008

Amy Winehouse has been diagnosed as suffering from the lung disease emphysema.

Her father, Mitch Winehouse, told the Sunday Mirror that doctors have warned his daughter that if she continues to smoke drugs she will die.

The condition is a progressive lung condition that leaves those suffering from it struggling for breath. It is caused after damage to the lung structure is caused – usually after activities such as smoking.

"She's got emphysema – it's in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe," Mitch Winehouse said.

"With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up," he continued. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She's got 70 per cent lung capacity."

The singer's father went on to condemn Pete Doherty, who his daughter has recently been hanging out with. "I don't want her hanging out with her mates like Pete Doherty," he said. "What hope does she have if people are taking drugs around her?"

You can't blame her. She's lonely with her Blake incarcerated.
