Prince to play Rio in Vegas

Didn't see a thread for this, but sounds pretty interesting:

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/11/01/D8L4L3TO0.html

Prince fans, fire up that Little Red Corvette and head for Las Vegas: the purple one will be performing there every weekend starting Nov. 10.
The diminutive rocker will play Friday- and Saturday-night shows at a nightclub inside the Rio hotel, spokeswoman Alissa Kelly said Wednesday.

Tickets for the 21-and-over shows cost $125 and will be available beginning Nov. 2.

Prince will also host Wednesday-night concerts at the club by other artists.

The Grammy winner, who once changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, will perform at the club indefinitely, Kelly said.

Prince joins a growing contingent of songsters who have settled in Vegas hotels as regularly featured acts, including Celine Dion, Elton John, Barry Manilow and Toni Braxton.

Music Club members actually had a 24-hour presale offer emailed to them, even though he's shut down the Music Club website (the little bastard). But do I have a way out to Vegas, let alone $125 for a ticket? Unfortunately, I do not.

I'd pay $125 for a Prince ticket.

I disagree with the "shorter" statement. Sometimes the shows are the same length, or have so many opening acts that it's LONGER (in the case of House of Blues).

I'm definitely going to go to this show. Perhaps more than once.

Rio Hotel & Casino...as indicated in the OP. But if you're talking about which club inside the Rio, the email I got made it sound like he would have a whole new club of his own with the hotel called "3121":

3121 has landed! Prince & The NPG have taken over and Vegas will never b the same! Come and witness the truth of the all new 3121 and the 3121 JAZZ CUISINE on the weekend of November 10th & 11th. An amazing night of music in the only place on the planet where u can xperience it first hand, in an intimate venue now known 4 all time as 3121 LAS VEGAS.

In addition 2 the earth-shaking per4mances in 3121, come and xperience 3121 Jazz Cuisine, featuring a brand new menu created by Executive Chef Lena Morgan. Live jazz music will set the tone 4 the evening as amazing jazz musicians from all over the world compliment this unique dining xperience. Real music by real musicians will always be synonymous with 3121, even at supper time! 4 dinner reservations, please call 702-777-7702.

Now this is a Vegas show I would go to. And the club sounds interesting altogether, provided Prince doesn't go in the wrong direction with it like he's done with some of his past ventures.

I will be interested to hear some reports from the first couple of shows. I checked out Ticketmaster, and the tickets are general admission. The doors open at 10:00 p.m., and Prince has no set time that he will perform. This almost sounds more like one of his aftershows than an actual concert. So, there's no telling what he will play. I wonder how many people are going to show up expecting Purple Rain and 1999 and get something completely different.

Prince opens Las Vegas club gig

Looks like this is one initial report:

LAS VEGAS - Prince unveiled a low-production but high-energy show as he debuted a new weekly casino gig, giving no indication he plans to become the next Wayne Newton.

Under a deal announced this month, he will perform shows for the next several Friday and Saturday nights in the 3121 club at The Rio casino-hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip.

The move surprised fans who have dubbed the star — now more than 20 years past his megahit album and movie "Purple Rain" — a pop, funk and soul innovator. Las Vegas, a place once known for showcasing stars in the twilight of their careers, wasn't expected.

"I just didn't think he was at the has-been stage, yet," said Pat Ellen, a 36-year-old social worker from Chicago, before Friday's show.

But organizers and bandmates say the man who once changed his name to a soundless symbol is simply taking his own tack again.

"I think he wants to bring a new element to Vegas; that's the whole point, to bring a new, fresh vibe," said Maya McClean, a Prince spokeswoman and half of the back-up group performing with the star, The Twinz.

The club — renamed from Club Rio — and an album released in March are named after the street address of the Los Angeles home where Prince once held intimate, private performances for the few and lucky. The new show is intended to recapture the private party feel in a small club.

The shows are expected to run "a couple of months" before the group goes on tour, McLean said.

Unlike many properties that spend millions on theater makeovers and elaborate productions for new stars, The Rio did little more than add a coat of purple paint, said Marilyn Winn, the casino's president. The club fits about 700 people.

"Prince is all about great music. We didn't want anything that we thought would detract from the great music," Winn said.

Friday's performance started at midnight and ran nearly two hours, later and longer than most Las Vegas shows. Tickets cost $125.

The show included an even mix of classics and new material, guitar solos, soulful ballads and funk. His racy hits, such as "Cream" and "Kiss," were a contrast to the tamer songs released since the star became a Jehovah's Witness.

"You don't have to be dirty to be sexy," Prince advised the Sin City audience, before launching into a sweet love song. "Let me show you."
