Bands on a Stage!

Why is it, when a band is onstage, they are usually set up like the following:

Bassist / Lead Singer / Guitarist
---------------------------------
Audience

Out of the hundreds of bands I have seen live, I would guess that 99% of them are set up like the above. They'll change places occasionally, but are generally in the same configuration. Is there some rule that is taught to bands before they start playing live?

I guess you've never heard the term "Frontman" before.

I was questioning more about why the bassist is usually on the left, and the guitarist is on the right.

Didn't the Eagles have similar set up? I remember Don Henley drumming from the right(audience right) side of the stage.
