CMJ New Music Monthly
Anybody else get this magazine? I have every issue going back to Summer 95, and I've not seen it mentioned much on here. It's basically a magazine that comes with a CD full of lesser known, unsigned, and up-and-coming bands.
The magazine itself is only marginally interesting, but the CDs usually have some good stuff...and are sometimes great. I can't tell you how many times some tune has hit on radio months and months after being included on the CD.
Anyway, the reason I bring it up now is that the CD in the current issue is one of my favorites ever. Wolfmother is on the cover and has the first track on the CD, and the CD has 6-10 (depending on taste) brilliant songs by artists you've probably never heard of.
Anyway, I don't even know how available this mag is at newstands these days, but if you get a chance, this month's is a really really good one.

I had a subscription from 2004 until a month or two ago. They've had financial issues, so not only did the size of the issues decrease in size, the rate at which issues would come out decreased.
One of my good friends was a graphic design artist for them a few years ago. In fact, they put pics from his "bachelor party" at Hooters (meant as a joke) in one of the issues.
Great magazine that opened my eyes to many great new artists.

i used to by this mag avery month. it really started sucking though (like you said songs that were big on the radio months later). it used to be cutting edge then it became dumping grounds for flavor of the month artists.
