Phoenix -- Discussion Thread

I keep playing the Long Distance Call video over and over again, and I absolutely love the song. I was wondering how the album as a whole is. I've read some reviews and they're a mixed bag, some calling it their best (I think Alphabetical was significantly better than United, but it was just good, not great), while others say it is mediocre at best. I like the mellow focused sound the best, as exemplified by Long Distance Call.

Anyways, I'm actually considering purchasing this cd (maybe my first purchase of this year, I'm usually behind on buying newly released stuff).

Do you guys recommend it for 9.99?

It's a very good album, IMO. It's light, poppy and upbeat. It reminds me a lot of The Magic Number's debut from last year or a less tongue-in-cheek version of The Pooh Sticks in that it has a strummy, 70s singer-songwriter/power pop feel to it. As I said, it's a fairly lightweight album so it's far from challenging but the songs are very high quality and catchy. If you like the song, definitely get the album, it's very consistent.

Thanks for the myspace link DrRingDing, I really enjoy the other two songs from the album on there, Napoleon and Rally.
And thanks for the comment Hiro11, I think I'm going to pick it up today.
I have not heard of The Magic Numbers or The Pooh Sticks, do you recommend those bands as well?

The Magic Numbers was about half a brilliant album, but that half is very good. They're a little cutesy and twee, but the songs are certainly peppy. I prefer the Phoenix album slightly , but definitely check out the Magic Numbers.

The Pooh Sticks are a riot, they're a very calculated (maybe even sarcastic)stab at pop stardom. The songs are zippy, insanely catchy and more than a little silly. They capture a certain type of seventies dayglo optimism but extend them to the point of irony. They're definitely an interesting band (more like just one guy pretending he's a band). Phoenix is similar in the sound of the music and the somewhat silly lyrical content.

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Anyone have this yet? I just purchased it today, and have already listened to it. It sounds like another great album from them to me. If anyone else on DVDTalk is a fan of this group I doubt you will find disappointment with this album.

Nice GenP Always been a fan of Phoenix, I think it's their best work. Lasso, Rome, great songs. I actually thought this album came out at the beggining of the year, I've had it for a while.

As someone not familiar with this group, what kind of sound do they have?

Who would you compare them to musically?

Re: Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

I really like this new CD! Lisztomania, 1901 and Lasso are favorites. I still think I might like It's Never Been Like That a little bit better but who knows after some time and more listens this one might end up being my favorite. I'm actually pretty new to Phoenix, caught them on SNL recently and was a fan instantly.

I loved It's Never Been Like That. This one, while still amazing, isn't as good as the previous. Wolfgang kind of grinds to a halt for both of the Love Like a Sunset tracks, before Lasso finally comes in and lifts it back up for a stellar close.

Also, my Target had it for $7.99 (Temp Price Cut), I believe all of them will have it for that great price for anyone wanting the physical disc.

Re: Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Yeah, I picked my copy up at Target for that price as well.

I've been a fan since United came out so it's kind of weird hearing about this "up and coming" band that I've been listening to for what feels like ages (well, around eight years).

i had never heard of Phoenix until they appeared on SNL earlier this year, but that appearance made me a fan. My copy came the other day, but i haven't had a chance to pop it in and give it a listen yet.

I thought this was going to be about another career detour for our man Joaquin.

Re: Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

They had a song on the "Lost in Translation" soundtrack, that's the first time I heard them. Great band, all of their albums are good. the new one is probably the best. I love the clean sound of their songs.

Re: Phoenix "Bankrupt" 4-23-13

Just listened to a leak twice this evening, and I really like it.

I just hope I don't get sick of it. 10 tracks and a tight 40 minutes.

I especially love the third song, "SOS in Bel-Air"

I heard this band was the second coming of The Beatles.

Really looking forward to this release. Loved WAP.

The deluxe edition has a bonus disc with, what I'm told, is at least 50 demos or something.

There are actually 71, most of which are less than a minute. Still pretty awesome though.

Have they done anything similar to Definitive Breaks off United? That track is awesome.

Re: Phoenix "Bankrupt" 4-23-13

Has anyone listened to this album yet?

I am thoroughly enjoying it. 9 of 10 tracks are good and the middle song is mostly instrumental until the end, but also a good one.
