The UK-only release "Heads Up!" thread
I personally feel partly responsible for not talking more about the Editors last year as people are just finding out about them (no, not you... you know, other people). While there's a lot of UK stuff that thankfully drowns in the Atlantic before it hits these shores (Babyshambles) there's tons of other stuff that takes months if not years to get here, if it ever even does (Mylo, Finley Quaye, James).
In college I used to have a great connection that dropped the UK knowledge on me but nowadays it's a bit more hit and miss. So, I'm leaving the responsibility to you all.
My recommendation for the time being is Morning Runnerr.

The album is refreshing in that it's not "great retro" rock, simply great rock. It reminds me a lot of early Starsailor for some reason. Good stuff!

How about a 2005 release that still hasn't been released in the US?
Someone on another forum posted a link to a video for Katie Melua's song Nine Million Bicycles and I fell in love with her and the song.
The album it's from, Piece by Piece, was released in Sept 2005 in the UK, and won't be available here until June 6th. I bought the import several months ago because I couldn't wait.

She's a vocalist from Georgia (of the former USSR) and she's got a marvelous voice and a pop/jazz/vocal flair. She gets compared to Norah Jones, but I think that mostly because of timing and the fact they share genres. Overall it's a very enjoyable album to listen to with most of the strongest songs placed in the first half. The second half does have some nice torch songs and a nice version of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" (this was also featured on the soundtrack to the recent movie of the same name).

The Research - Breaking Up
Great keyboard-driven pop. I caught these guys with the Envelopes back in March for a one-off, pre-SXSW show in New York. They're a 3 piece (2 females on the rhythm; sleepy-vocals male on keyboard), and they've got some great songs.

I've really enjoyed the album from My Latest Novel - 'Wolves'. Which reviewers and myself are describing as Scotland's answer to the Arcade Fire.

also I recommend The Mystery Jets 'Making Dens'

I am sure at some point, the new Zuton's album will make it stateside, but having given it a listen over the weekend - I quite enjoyed it.

oh goddamn, I was about to place an order for the Dirty Pretty Things album(CD+DVD edition) from CDWow, which is coming out next Monday - and the conversion price of 10.99 GBP to US dollars is a little over twenty bucks - ouch, the dollar is really really weak... it's getting me a bit peeved.

And my current UK-only recommendation: Adem, Love and Other Planets

Achingly beautiful, layered folk-tronica. RIYL: Four Tet, Caribou, Animal Collective, Fog... Adem used to be part of Kieran Hebden's (aka Four Tet) band Fridge, so the comparison comes easily.

Let's not forget the yet-to-see-stateside-release by The Cardigans - Super Extra Gravity*.
*Yeah yeah, so it was 2005. But it still hasn't reached the States yet.

Even 'Long Gone Before Daylight' took sometime to get released here in the states - I think a year. The search (and eventual purchase) for the elusive SACD multichannel version of the album was near impossible.

When I first read through this thread nothing came to mine, but I have since remembered the band Athlete who I was introduced to last year while on vacation there.
Plunked down $26 for the disc (which I went on to like the entire thing).
Week after I got back from holiday it went on sale here...

The Kooks album is really good, as is the Zutons. The Mystery Jets is about half good (and that half is pretty damned good). I'm not liking the Morning Runner and Embrace albums too much, but they're not bad.

actually, I think the latest album from Embrace is much better than the 2004 release.

just gave the debut album from ex-Libertine Carl Barat's new band: Dirty Pretty Things a listen - and was quite impressed one of the better hyped bands at the moment if you ask me:

~
a great retrospect album was recently released from The Bluetones, a Brit-pop band from the mid to late 80's that in my mind could have made a name for themselves here in the states but didn't, they're greatly underrated and one of my favourite bands since their debut album. The 'best of' album complies their singles, plus b-sides, alternate cuts and another disc of even more songs.

Next Monday sees the release of the eleventh (!) album from The Beautiful South - am definately looking forward to this release as well:

The fourth album from the Cosmic Rough Riders is also released next Monday in the UK. And as being a fan of theirs, their sound recalls 70's rock, The Byrds, The Beach Boys (give or take) the albums are consistantly good

Actually there is 2 vinyls , one vinyl has "High 5" and the other one has "Uptight". Both Bsides are great too. (listening to them now)
and The Cardigans - Super Extra Gravity is a great album too, worth picking up when it gets stateside.

was extremely impressed with the group and album from The Upper Room: 'Other People's Problems'

their sound kind of recalls the poppier/bouncier songs from The Ocean Blue.

Good thread; I forgot it existed!
Frightened Rabbit was around when this thread was active, but I think their profile has ramped up a lot with subsequent albums over the years since. I know I wasn't aware of them until a year or two back.

Hmm - I've had a rental car all week, with XM, and the first track I saw on youtube from Hurts was played a lot.. - Wonderful Life - I like it.
That and now that I see the video it was all over European MTV last October

They're coming to Hong Kong and every street is plastered with their photos. They looked like a moody boy band but I will have to reconsider now.

That "Wonderful Life" song comes off as a late 80s/early 90s sound to me, and I don't think that's a great thing. I wanted to like the song, but it didn't do anything for me.
