Here's a live album I heard before any of the band's studio output:

Also the same thing happened with this one:

Well I didn't hear this version but still...

Love boths bands to this day.

One of my favorite bands:

Plus their last album with Hugh Cornwell-Live at Alexandria Palace.

Just listened today to The Clash live album From Here To Eternity, which covers performances from 1978 until 1982. Wow! It's amazing it took so long to release a live album by these guys (it first came out in 1999), because they were obviously a really great live band back in their time.

Living in Clip by Ani Difranco

Completely captures her live pressence. The CD that introduced me to her and still my favorite.

I saw Ani DiFranco perform years ago and thought she was great. So I went out and bought one of her studio albums and was very disappointed by it. Her studio albums can't compare to her live performances at all!

She has another live album (So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter) which while good, just didn't capture the experience as much as Living in Clip.

I'm hardly an expert, but Iced Earth's Alive in Athens is pretty darn good.

Also heard the Ramones live album It's Alive for the first time. It's amazing how much faster they played their songs live - they tear through 28 songs on this album in less than an hour! Great live album from the band's heyday.

I don't think I've heard that one-I remember reading the sound quality was subpar and never pursued it. Maybe it's better on cd.

Grateful Dead - Live/Dead

There is also a 3 disc version of the shows that made live/dead called 'Fillmore West 1969" and for the completest there is a 10 disc version that has all 4 shows complete.

There's is a TON of live Dead stuff out there, but this is the best.

The sound quality on Loco Live is better, but the performance on It's Alive is the best.

Rod Stewart Unplugged.

He sounds about 10x better than his recordings.

cdollaz and Hiro11, thanks for the advise. Even though I already had the extended special edition CD of Stop Making Sense, I went ahead and bought the 2-disc The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads and you two are completely right - it's a better live album.

Snowmaker would definately agree with you, I myself would have to say Vanilla Ice's "Extremely Live". You can't go wrong with Nine minutes and twenty seconds of Ice Ice Baby.

Someone told me about this being a great concert recording, and AMG frequently calls it the "Greatest Concert Album Ever". But there are so many different releases of it out that I don't know which is the one to get.

Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong - Live Recordings is an excellent cd.

Wilco - Kicking Television has to be my favorite. 2 discs with most of the songs from YHF and AGIB. Great set.

Bright Eyes - Motion Sickness - another favorite of mine.

Good call on Johnny Cash. I can't believe it took that long.

As another thread reminded me, Bob Marley & the Wailers 2-disc CD Live at the Roxy is a great live album. For both sound quality and performance quality, it's my favorite of Marley's live albums.

Kiss live albums are about as "live" as a Britney Spears concert.

Phish - NYE '95
Social Distortion - Live at the Roxy
Gov't Mule - The Deepest End

What are, in your opinions, the best "Live" concert (or other live forms, BBC Sessions for example) recordings commercially-available out there?
oh that's easy:

It gets me dancing everytime I listen to it.
