I'll be happy enough if The Smiths would release complete live recordings of some of their concerts from the '80s (the truncated concert on "Rank" just isn't enough!)

From what I've read a lot of young Hispanic men can relate to his tragic/romantic persona even though a lot of them don't speak English. It's really a fascinating phenomenon. A proper English bloke from Manchester worshipped by Hispanics in California. THere's even a cover band called the Sweet and Tender Holligans who attract huge crowds.

True. I imagine ABBA would have had no dibs on the related DVD sales of concerts, merchandising etc. The co-op fronting the cash would have to get the $$ back somewhere and ticket prices alone would not have covered it.

The thing is Morrissey is well off enough NOT to want to do it. I mean if you have enough money to keep you happy and never want for anything, then not everyone is going to be motivated to get more.

It's a lot of money (although it will have to go four ways you would assume AND then there is management, roadies, lighting etc - it would soon deplete). Besides Morrissey can tour solo and receive the adulation, perform Smiths songs and still make money.

It would be nice to see them back but I can see all the reasons why it will probably never happen!

this is very true. I saw Morrisey at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. The crowd was at least half hispanic if not more. I was really suprised. Crowd got rough too. Saw two fights break out.

He certainly does! On his current tour he's been playing Girlfriend in a Coma, Still Ill, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and How Soon Is Now.

Regarding the Latin American/Smiths connection, I've been stopping and watching bits of this during my lunch hours:

Phil Collins
el mundo no escuchara
(2004)

Wed, Mar 1 - Fri, Mar 31, 2006
The Box

In March we're screening Wexner Center Residency Artist Phil Collins's el mundo no escuchara (the world won't listen), an exhilarating karaoke video "album" of Colombian fans singing along to tracks by 1980s' rock band the Smiths.

The British artist produced this project in Bogota, Colombia. While there, he recorded note-for-note backing tracks to the Smiths' 1987 compilation album The World Won't Listen with studio musicians and then captured local fans singing along to their favorite songs in front of an improvised film set. (video, 70 mins.)

The ongoing project reflects Collins's belief that the band piercingly captures the sentiments of isolation and being misunderstood experienced by fans in many countries. As Collins has learned on his travels, the Smiths' music speaks to "isolated bedroom devotees" from Bogota to Istanbul, Turkey, where he has since produced another version of the video.
It's one of the more amazing things I've ever seen.

ETA: that's not the same Phil Collins that was in Genesis and Brand X

I liked YATQ, though I'm more of a Suedehead. I'll check this one out for sure.

I don't think it's fair to compare him to Hassellhoff. The novelty of Hasselhoff is that he's largely a joke in the US and has idol status in Europe. Morrissey, (though obviously an acquired taste) is taken seriously as a singer and especially as a songwriter.

I remember reading about his abstinence several years ago.
