Looking for bands that signified 'drugs' by decade

I'm trying to offer assistance to my 14-yr-old daughter. Her and a friend are putting a speech together about bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s whose drug use greatly influenced their music (as opposed to just musicians who 'did' drugs).

Here's what I came up with initially:

60s
Beatles

70s
Grateful Dead

80s
?????????

90s
I originally had Kurt Cobain, but I'm unsure about that one...

Any ideas?

I don't get any hint of drugs in Poison lyrics. If you mean they did drugs... Motey Crue has them all beat by miles.

The original post is pretty clear: "Her and a friend are putting a speech together about bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s whose drug use greatly influenced their music (as opposed to just musicians who 'did' drugs)."

1960s: I disagree a little bit with The Beatles and would lean more toward Jefferson Airplane.

1970s: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Greatful Dead.

I'll have to think a bit longer on the latter decades.

sublime for the 90's....the singer (brad nowell) felt that heroin helped him write music. of course he later died of an OD.

if it doesnt have to be popular bands than psychic tv is heavily influenced by LSD...i cant remember if they started in the 80's or 90's though and im to lazy to google it.

1980's - Motley Crue. Excess upon top of excess.

Metallica were known as Alcoholica.

For the 90's/2000's - Eminem

Almost every pick I ever saw of Cliff Burton, his nose is redder than Bozo's.

I still don't get the Poison-drug connection. 99% of their songs were about getting laid. Where's the drug/psychedelic/wacked-out-nonsensical-lyric-because-we're-stoned connection there? Surely there's a difference between sex & party songs to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

I mentioned poison but it was probably a stretch. I meant more of what drugs did to their band and how they fell apart. I didn't think they had much talent to begin with but their overindulgence certainly caused their downfall (and general lack of talent). Either way, I guess Poison is a bit of a stretch anyway. Also, I think The Beatles should be on the list. Brian Wilson, during and after Pet Sounds should be on there as well. The work he did with Van Dyke Parks was pretty heavily drug influenced.

Good one.

I had also thought of Happy Mondays, but I wasn't sure if the band itself was into the whole drug scene (though it's pretty clear the music is geared toward that "crowd")

For the '90s I'd say The Black Crowes. They smoked a lot of pot.

The Mondays had a band member (Bez), whose main functions in the band were dancing onstage and taking/procuring drugs.

I'll second this one.

He brought too huge joints on stage at one show, (with lighted tips that "puffed" themselves) and threw "joints" out to the crowd at another. (Just rolled paper.) Not ta mention the song Mary Jane.

Aerosmith has to be a contender too. Tyler used to keep drug hidden in his scarves on stage.
