I was thinking about this recently - sometimes a not-so-great movie has a great soundtrack (orchestral or 'regular music' tracks).

For instance Cutthroat Island i dont particularly care for, but the soundtrack I think is awesome. (Morgan's theme for one)

And a lot of people dont like 'The Beach' - but the music soundtrack i think is one of the best.

I hate the soundtrack to Storytelling and it was the first downfall for Belle and Sebastian for me but the movie wasn't much better, either.

Actually, I'm not saying Stealing Beauty is a bad film (it was alright), but I owned and loved the soundtrack for almost 8 years before I ever saw the film.

A perfect late-night mood-mix with exclusive songs by The Cocteau Twins and Liz Phair, great tracks by Portishead and Mazzy Star and classic older songs by Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, John Lee Hooker and Stevie Wonder. Then there's the magical genre bending cover of If 6 Was 9 by Axiom Funk. Not a bad track on this disc and far better than the movie itself (IMO).

For some reason, I've always liked the Gone In 60 Seconds soundtrack.

For you Americana / roots rock people out there, the soundtrack to "The Slaughter Rule" is a really, really good record. There's some good stuff on there - Uncle Tupelo, Ryan Adams, Neko Case, Jim Lauderdale, and a solid score by Jay Farrar.

As for the movie, it's great if you're into the homoerotic nuances of small-town high school football in rural Wyoming. Sounds more interesting than it really is...

I am not sure if I am into "homoerotic nuances of small-town high school football in rural Wyoming" (I could be and haven't found it out yet) - but the movie is brilliant right along with the soundtrack.

I'd say Collateral. Didn't like the film that much, but the soundtrack/score was outstanding.
