I was wondering about the longest time between studio albums of new material for 'established bands', not taking official breakups and reformations into account.

I was propmpted into wondering this by ABC (Poison Arrow, The Look of Love, Be Near Me etc). It's been almost nine years since the last album (and that was the first for six years as it was). The main man Martin Fry has toured under the band name all through that period (and managed two new tracks for a compilation CD some years back and a few new tracks performed live) but other than that has been quiet on the 'new music' front

What other artists/bands like to 'take their time'? Kate Bush springs to mind with her latest.

Though the group released only one album, the fine 1982 effort Shake and Push, Thompson and Whitney later formed the backbone of the Skeletons, the touring band led by Steve Forbert

I always thought Boston held the record for longest time between releases, but I'm probably wrong.

Maybe I'm thinking of them as having the fewest releases over the longest period of time.

Hell, I don't know. I don't like Boston anyway.









What were we talking about?

Yep it was twelve years between The Red Shoes (1993) and Aerial (2005).

Another one I can think of is Madeleine Peyroux. She's not that well known, but I waited eight years for her to follow up to Dreamland (1996) with Careless Love (2004)

Consistently, you are probably correct, having only 4 albums in 30 years.

Stevie Wonder's new CD is his first in about 10 years.

Off the top of my head, I know Peter Gabriel seems to take very long breaks between albums (not quite 19 years though!).

What about Vashti Bunyan?

She recorded Just Another Day, her debut, in 1969. Her second album, Lookaftering, came out last year.

Terry Callier also came to mind. He had an album in 1979, and then again in 1998, almost twenty years.

Vashti I think takes the cake.

Pretty sure the winner is:

Steely Dan Gaucho 1980 to Everything Must Go 2003 - 23 years.

Although Steely Dan is a much bigger artist. And Two Against Nature came out in 2000.

Well the easy answer is 38 years which belongs to Guns n' Roses: 1994 to 2031 when Chinese Democracy will be released.

Infinity doesn't count.

KISS hasn't had a studio album out since '96.

The Knitters (X & Blasters sidegroup) 20 years 85-05

New York Dolls will have a new album out later this year. That's 30+ years (but to be fair, they haven't been regularly touring for the past 30 years).

Who has time to record when you are on a Farewell-retirement tour every 12 months?

Actually, it was 1998 for Psycho Circus, and they've only done one "Farewell Tour," in 2000-2001. It ended up being the, "Farewell to the original line-up," tour as they never toured with the original line-up intact again. And that's a good thing. (Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer are much, MUCH better musicians than Peter Criss and Ace Frehley.)

Gene Simmons released a solo album in 2004, and Paul Stanley just completed one which will be out before May.

I was thinking the same band "Boston" but unlike The_Infidel i really enjoy all of there releases, especially there last three albums "third stage- 1986" "Walk On - 1994" and "Corporate America - 2002" 8 years between each album...

Gabriel's longest break was the ten-year gap between Us (1992) and Up (2002).

Another candidate: XTC. They had a seven year gap between Nonsuch (1992) and Apple Venus (1999)... and now, they're currently on a five-and-a-half year dry stretch, not having released a studio album since Wasp Star in May of 2000.

But didn't he have Ovo and the soundtrack to Rabbit Proof Fence and a few other projects in that time? OK - not studio albums proper perhaps, but albums of new music nonetheless?

Yes there is love for that album, like i mentioned in my post i enjoy all of there albums, i just enjoy there newer stuff "if you can call it new" more.

Actually it's 5 albums "Corporate America" came out a couple years ago...
