MusicTalk Draft Game - Round 2 Voting (Come one, come all!)
 

Welcome to round two of the MusicTalk Draft Tournament! In this thread, the players drafted a virtual “collection” of ten albums. Now, it is up to you, the MusicTalk community, to vote on which player has drafted the best collection.

For round 2, all the players have been randomly paired up. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best lineup. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair!

In addition, once you post your votes, you CANNOT edit that post for any reason. Edited voting posts will not be counted.

Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection.

So, let the voting begin! Voting ends on Wednesday, November 9th, at the exact time of the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post.

Those with more "Top Artist" picks won 11 out of 16 times, 13 out of 16 if you count ties as winning. They also garnered 25% more votes on average (getting 354 votes to 286).

The "classes" so far are evenly split. Each has lost about half of its players. It looks like the age of the albums so far has not had much of an effect.



WINNERS, BY DEVIATION OF YEAR

This was mostly inconclusive... Still... people who drafted from a group of about a decade did very well. Those who stuck to too strict of a time period (Hollowgen, tripwire) or were all over the place (orange crush, ADD, myself) did not do well. This test seems to give an edge to maxfisher, jimdrix, DJLinus, BadlyDrawnBoy, ryuryu2949, and illenium.

These players either had a super-strong collection or a weak opponent. Keep a close eye on them.

Predictions based on stats collected from the draft and Round 1. This is a mathematical/statistical/scientific prediction, not my "gut instinct" -- we'll see how these work out.

Apex Twin vs. ryuryu2949
The main event, it seems like. This one is tough. Apex has a slight edge in # of Top Artists drafted, but then loses slightly because ryu seems to be in a statistical sweet spot with the deviation. Apex, however, garnered a lot of votes over his opponent, although not much more than ryu. The stats give a slight edge to: Apex Twin.


ChrisKnudsen vs. maxfisher
maxfisher has a lot of the top artists, he's in the "sweet spot" for years picked, and he got a ton of votes. This one points all the way to: maxfisher.


cdollaz vs. Flynn
Dead even in top artists, on the edges of the curve time-wise. However, cdollaz had a higher vote count. A slight edge to: cdollaz.


Lokimok vs. BadlyDrawnBoy
Lokimok has an edge on Top Artists, but BadlyDrawnBoy garnered a lot of votes and he's in the magical "sweet spot" --- BadlyDrawnBoy gets an edge, but very slight. This could go either way.


Vryce vs. illennium
This one is inconclusive. illenium has the same amount of top artists as Vryce, but was able to beat a statistically stronger opponent. I think this might make illenium the winner.


Giles vs. jimdrix
This one is going to be a slaughter (according to the stats). jimdrix has a lot of the top artists, garnered a lot of votes last round, and is in that mysterious deviation range that brough success to so many last round. Sorry, Giles.


DJLinus vs. cleaver
This one is a bit inconclusive. cleaver seems to have a slight edge, but neither player was able to get an overpowering vote the first round. DJLinus by a smidgen, according to the stats.


Mordred vs. Damfino
This one is giving a slight edge to Damfino, although not a lot of evidence points to his victory.


I personally don't agree with some of the predictions, but we'll see what happens.

I guess I should take this opportunity to pimp my picks:

<B>OK Computer - Radiohead: </B> One of, if the not the, most critically acclaimed bands of the last decade, this album is frequently in the top 5 or 10 on "all time greatest albums"-type lists.<BR><BR>

<B>London Calling - The Clash:</B> Classic album and many great artists refer to this band and album as being very influential in their development.<BR><BR>

<B>The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads - Talking Heads:</B> The 2-disc Remastered version. Quite possibly Talking Heads definitive moment. The versions of many songs on this live album trump their studio versions.<BR><BR>
<B>This Year's Model - Elvis Costello And The Attractions:</B> Elvis' first album with the Attractions, this is the album that started the legend, with biting lyrics and non-stop grooves.<BR><BR>

<B>Swordfishtrombones - Tom Waits:</B>Although Rain Dogs is usually the sexy Tom Waits pick, this is the album that started his transformation from barroom balladeer to junkyard carnival barker, and is equally as good.<BR><BR>

<B>Boy - U2:</B>The one that started all. This album is as fresh and vital sounding today as it was 20 years ago. <BR><BR>

<B>Angel Dust - Faith No More:</B> The album that introduced us to the genius that is Mike Patton. Although he sang on The Real Thing, this was the first FNM album in which Patton was heavily involved in the writing. Patton is one of the icons of "alternative" music. <BR><BR>

<B>Teenager Of The Year - Frank Black:</B> There aren't many albums with 21 tracks that do not have any filler on them. This is one of them. Quite a few different styles and FB was a songwriting peak here.<BR><BR>

<B>Fair Warning - Van Halen:</B> 1984 and VH1 are probably more well known, but Fair Warning is their best album. It has the best VH song ever, Mean Street, and other classics like Dirty Movies, Unchained, and One Foot Out The Door<BR><BR>

<B>Moving Pictures - Rush:</b> Doesn't seem to be a very popular pick so far. Even if you do not personally do not like Rush, you can't deny this album's place in history, as the album that kept a whole generation of Dungeons & Dragons geeks in their basements and playing air drums, instead of chasing girls.

Don't forget to change your sigs so that they direct people to this thread.

1. Aphex Twin, not even close, Rubber Soul, Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme. I don't even know half of his albums :lol: but he wins because of these.
2. ChrisKnudsen, VU and the Minutemen
3. cdollaz, no contest. I mean, London Calling, Talking Heads, Tom Waits. I can even forgive him for the U2, Rush, and Van Halen. :p
4. Lokimok, the first collection where I actually want to listen to almost everything on there.
5.Vryce, not feeling either of these (I mean, come on, Jonatha Brooke on a top ten?), but Joni's Blue sways me.
6. jimdrix, after reading Giles's list, I had to go no further than #1, Revolver, to decide this one.
7. cleaver, too many classics
8. Damfino, this one was TOUGH, but Damfino takes it for 2 things: great box set choice, and for the inclusion of X, one of my favorite bands.

Way to undersell one of the best albums in music history.

Don't want to go too overboard. Besides, words don't really do it justice.

I guess I'll follow suit and pimp my choices.

Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon (1973 release) - The quintessential album of the 70's. and markedly the pinacle of Pink Floyd. Also, you have to admire an album that can sync up with The Wizard of Oz to give you The Dark Side of Oz. :)

Billie Holiday: The Complete Decca Recordings [box set] - The peak of her career and her voice at top form. The definetly best years in Billie's recordings all gathered for your enjoyment.

Portishead: Dummy - TripHop, as its called. I fell in love with the sound from Sour Times.

Joni Mitchell: Blue - Sad, spare, and beautiful, Blue is the quintessential confessional singer/songwriter album. Forthright and poetic, Joni Mitchell's songs are raw nerves, tales of love and loss.

The Police: Synchronicity - My first exporsure to The Police. So many great songs with this recording.

Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine - From the very first time I heard Head Like a Hole I was hooked.

White Stripes: Elephant - An infectious beat in Seven Nation Army drove me to to listen to more of them. I was hooked.

Alanis Morissette: Jagged Little Pill - The song that defined her, You Outta Know was such a powerful, emotion filled song. We'll forgive her that it was written about Uncle Joey from Full House.

New Order: Substance - Bizarre Love Triangle. Nuff said.

Jonatha Brooke & The Story: Plumb - My guilty pleasure and one that probably hurts my line up the most. But from the very first time I heard Jonatha Brooks voice, I was in. I have seen her live twice and she is a great performer. She had a song featured on Dawson's Creek and in the Disney movie, Return to Neverland.

Aphex Twin - pretty easy, and a real strong selection of music.

2. ChrisKnudsen vs. maxfisher
maxfisher - went with Max as I still only have 1 cd from Chris's set, and
its a little too varied for my taste.

cdollaz
Tough one here, but I'll give the edge to cdollaz, having travis and coldplay
who are v. similar is hurting Flynn's picks, and the less said about DMB the better.

4. Lokimok vs. BadlyDrawnBoy

BadlyDrawnBoy - I have a hard time voting against myself on principle. albums I really like from loki
are near the bottom of his 10, PJ, Roxy, nick cave.

5. Vryce vs. illennium

illennium - Kid A and the Stone Roses won this over for me, even if I'm soured on Ian Brown from
the show in San Francisco earlier this year.

6. Giles vs. jimdrix
jimdrix - Tough choice for me as Giles is a fave of mine, but Sign O'The Times nails it

7. DJLinus vs. cleaver

DJLinus - as much as I love cleaver's picks, I have to go with DJLinus

1. Aphex Twin vs. ryuryu2949

APEX TWIN - The whole concept of pitting "everything the Beatles ever did" against one perfect Beatles album (ie. "Rubber Soul") is absurd. But the inclusion of DMB in ryuryu's lineup pretty much killed all credibility. DMB is a flavor of a specific time and place - not one for the ages.

2. ChrisKnudsen vs. maxfisher

maxfisher - As much as I admire the choices in ChrisKnudsen's group and understand why they're totemic in their various genres for various reasons, I'm far more attached to the discs in maxfisher's set - excluding the Pink Floyd, which is overrated in so very many ways.

3. cdollaz vs. Flynn

cdollaz, even with his "Achilles Heel" - Rush - *gak* Mostly because Coldplay, Travis and DMB just do not and will not stand the test of time. Secondly, Flynn's choices all seemed to be focused very much in the now - too heavily weighted to the last few years.

4. Lokimok vs. BadlyDrawnBoy

BadlyDrawnBoy - Easiest pick of the bunch. "Joshua Tree" and "Purple Rain," the Alpha and the Omega - the two most popular and enduring classics from two of the 80's most influential artists. Plus, P.J. Harvey is another of those "well, we ought to admire her" artists that just don't speak to me. And Zappa is just flat-out annoying.

5. Vryce vs. illennium

illennium - Again, the Radiohead and Stone Roses are a one-two punch that's hard to beat. And, although I love Joni Mitchell's "Blue" - that coupled with Billy Holiday and Portishead is really too many of the same kind and feel. Not truly enough variety in Vryce's picks - although "Synchonicity," "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Substance" are much more my speed. Oh, and there's negative that is Pink Floyd again. Meh.

6. Giles vs. jimdrix

jimdrix - Iconic choices all the way down the line. Giles - "The Muppet Movie?" WTF?

7. DJLinus vs. cleaver

cleaver - Although as a devotee of the 80's, "Disintegration" - by itself - nearly swayed me otherwise. Not over "Sgt. Pepper's" though.

8. Mordred vs. Damfino

Mordred - The inclusion of "American Idiot" is too much for me to bear. That's a knee-jerk reaction, of course, from its being played incessantly at the moment - becoming the new middle-o-the-road aural wallpaper at every station that claims to play current "rock." "Armed Forces," "Goo" and "Los Angeles" are sentimental favorites though.

3. Flynn - While not the sole deciding factor, Ok Computer vs. The Bends helped sway me, as I'm one of something like 4 people on the planet who slightly prefer The Bends.

5. Vryce - My gut instinct of voting against Jagged Little Pill remains intact, but Vryce has more albums that I enjoy enough to pull out on a semi-regular basis.

During the run-off between ChrisKnudsen and Hollowgen, I thought to myself that it'd be funny if whichever of them ended up winning proceeded to round 2 and knocked out someone that had cast a potentially tie-breaking vote for them. Well, I voted for Chris in both round 1 and the runoff and now I'm starting to worry that the joke will be on me...

1. Ryuryu2949 - Close one, was hard to decide.
2. ChrisKnudsen - I really like the T.Rex and Slayer choices. I think this was my hardest decision.
3. Flynn - I like Flynn's Radiohead and dislike cdollaz. I like cdollaz U2, and dislike Flynn's. Angel Dust and Fair Warning are both really cool choices, but Wish You Were Here trumps them both.
4. BadlyDrawnBoy - By a hair (and in spite of Faith)!
5. Vryce - Vryce's first 5 choices are outstanding (even if Portishead is really high). He loses his way around choice 8, but his taste is much closer to mine than illinium.
6. Giles - Somehow his 8-10 just beats out jimdrix's 6-8.
7. Cleaver - Classic, classic stuff here.
8. Mordred - Possibly the best list here. I like this guys taste. :D

Ok, I am getting killed because I picked a live Dave Matthews album. I need to defend this pronto.

Note this a Dave Matthews SOLO acoustic album, and not the DMB (Dave Matthews Band). I don't even like DMB but this album is really beautiful, acoustic music. Just two very talented people playing acoustic guitars and creating ridiculous harmonies and of course, great acoustic solos. I would venture to say that it is one of the best acoustic album I have ever heard.

Again, I don't like DMB, but someone turned me on to this album and I have loved it. Unless you have heard this album and don't like it, please don't downgrade me "just because" it is a Dave Matthews album. It truly is a different animal. Please don't prejudge it.
