Wolf Parade thread

This has just taken over the New Pornographers latest as my favorite of the year and it is a pretty solid album...can't see it being replaced. Im listening to it with the same furvor I listned to Arcade Fire last year.

The year TOPs so far (no real order yet):
Wolf Parade
New Pornographers
Sufjan Stevens
Minmae
M. Ward
Sons and Daughters
Sleater-Kinney
Okkervil River
Bloc Party
Amusement Parks on Fire

Hollowgen 09-27-05 10:30 AM

i just saw these guys last week, and they were great! i've been obsessing over picking up this album for months now. i've read nothing but positive reviews, so now i'm pretty excited!

BDB 09-27-05 10:58 AM

Yup saw them open for Arcade Fire, pretty damnded good.

illennium 09-27-05 12:30 PM

I've been listening to an advance copy for the past few weeks, and it is definitely my favorite album of the year. I first heard them when they opened an unannounced Modest Mouse show at Webster Hall earlier this year. They blew MM away.

Noojimbo 09-27-05 04:51 PM

Picked up the album today - spectacular.

jonnyrocks 09-28-05 08:51 AM

I think this is a completely solid album.

The only thing that disappoints me is the fact that more than a handful of the tracks have already been released on their EPs (granted, they have been rerecorded for the album). I expected to hear more new material from these guys because they're so damn good!

That aside, the album is excellent!

auto 09-28-05 09:35 AM

Picked this up yesterday on a blind buy after hearing so much good feedback here and elsewhere. I'll spin it tonight.

Matty-O 09-28-05 04:27 PM

Between this and Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah it's been a good couple of weeks for music.

Quake1028 09-28-05 07:13 PM

Just picked it up. Giving it a spin now.

Hollowgen 10-01-05 01:54 PM

... on related note: is anyone else getting sick of this cheap cardboard packaging? not because i fancy hard plastic to cardboard or anything, but because you're almost guaranteed to scratch your brand new disc upon removing it from the sleeve!

Caliking 10-03-05 09:26 PM

i dunno...iTunes isnt all that bad :)

anyway. im still loving this album. listened to it all the way from Morgan Hill, CA to San Luis Obispo this weekend. Im still listening (i throw in a mix or two for a break so i dont burn out).

Hollowgen 10-03-05 09:31 PM

between this and clap your hands say yeah, i'm not sure which is the bigger breath of fresh air. this is the kind of stuff that i'm constantly searching for when i check out different music. this one won't leave my player for a while!

Rocketdog2000 10-03-05 11:50 PM

Listened to it today, and I'm just not hearing it. Sounds kind of like Modest Mouse, and I'm not exactly keen on them, either. Maybe more spins will do the trick, but so far, it's leaving me cold.

Ralph Wiggum 10-04-05 03:50 AM

Yeah, this record has a Modest Mouse Lite vibe to it.

Hiro11 11-10-05 03:56 PM

I got this last night. Great album, a bit like Arcade Fire combined with lo-fi stuff like GBV or Sebadoh. Modest Mouse is definitely similar, but Wolf Parade has better songs on this one than Modest Mouse has on "Good News..." IMO.

This album seems to be yet another feature popular indie music memes:
-yelping singer a la Pere Ubu? yep
-wooshing and burbling analogue synths? yep
-no-wave faux Sonic Youth detuned guitar strumming? yep
-disco drum patterns sneaking about? yep
...etc.

I'm not complaining because I like the results. It's just funny to see indie seemingly become as conformist as pop...

BDB 11-10-05 04:32 PM

Headlining tour is coming up in January

The Bus 11-10-05 09:26 PM

Their stuff is pretty good... It took me a good 6 or 7 listens before I liked it, but once I got hooked... MAN!

darkessenz 11-10-05 10:38 PM

sweet cd. If you like sigur ros check out "animal collective" too.

worrywort 11-10-05 10:42 PM

Could the reason for the Modest Mouse vibe be, in fact, because
Isaac Brock himself produced the album?

The second side rocks so lovely. Tracks 7,8,9,10 are machine-gun solid.

Comedyman90 11-12-05 12:05 AM

These guys are really great. I picked up thier album right when it came out. Solid stuff. Got great potential.

ChrisKnudsen 11-12-05 03:33 PM

The Wolf Parade record is overrated. Last year I did a top 500 list of best albums of the year. This year, though, I feel like I can't even do a top 10.

because people genuinely like it?

it's not an immediate classic, and can be challenging, imo.

you can't come up with a top 10 list for the year??? maybe you haven't been paying enough attention. this year has been pretty big for indie music alone. :)

ChrisKnudsen 11-13-05 03:39 AM

The Wolf Parade record isn't great is what I mean by that it is overrated. I have listened to aprox 750 albums this year (at least one new album a day and more on the weekends) and really none of them are something that I have listened to over 50 times like I did last year that is really extroadinary?

Do you realize how rediculous you sound? You say that you listened to approx. 750 albums this year?! AND you say none of them were worthy of a 50+ listens unlike last year's crop of the 500 albums that you listened to?!

If you are going to stretch the truth, try to do it in a way where you may have a chance of making someone believe you are not actually full of utter bullshit. Your post deserves to be displayed as an example of how NOT to converse with people on the Internet.

Thanks for the laugh though.

that you've listened to 750 albums means that you probably haven't been able to fully absorb a single one of them, and therefore your opinion is not worth considering.

Hey, I am not saying that I listened to 500 albums over 50 times last year. At least there were some on that list (my top 15) were I listened to it quite excessively. When you work at a desk job where you can listen to hours upon of hours of nonstop music and write music reviews for a college radio station, it seems a little more realistic. So, you don't believe me. I am just stating that this year has been a drought and pretty much nothing but OK or good albums have come out this year. I have a list if you want it. I have listened to almost everything that has been talked about so far except that Minmae record that was listed in the first post. It is in my cue right now, though.

There is about a few albums this year that have came close to the 50 mark. The first being, "I am a Bird now" which is at 44 times, "Cripple Crow" at 41 times, the Hospitals' "I've Visted the Island of Jocks and Jazz" at 38 times, the "Kiki and Herb will Die for You" album at 35 times and the Sunday Sinners cd-r demo at 32 times. Worth noting, the new Sunburned Hand of the Man double album "Wedlock" has been listened to 12 times this week alone. Granted it is a live recording of a 2003 wedding, it is still wonderfully amazing.

Wolf Parade - At Mt. Zoomer (6/17)

Got my preorder in at Subpop - can't wait for this one! They are streaming the whole album on their myspace page right now, so far I'm liking it :) Will be nice to hear on vinyl rather than Myspace streaming however.

And a review of it - http://www.seattleweekly.com/2008-06...c/wolf-parade/
