Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Looking forward to catching these guys on tour, pretty small venues from what I can see.
http://www.clapyourhandssayyeah.com/shows.php berated was I for not spelling the name right no comma on the webpage. |
Riyl?
|
Frankly, I'd rather see the Sigur Roses and the Radioheads. Oh, and the Pulps and the Big Stars too.
It's Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah. That's the band's name. ;) |
They're in Columbus on 9/20. Maybe I'll check 'em out. BDB generally has pretty good taste... ;)

Except the fact that's he named after an artist whose output has increasingly become worse and worse and whose debut now looks like a fluke. But I guess he still has good taste. :) |
Are they any good? What do they sound like? This smells suspiciously of Yet Another Band That Pitchfork Loves Because They Represent Some Kind Of New York Post-Graduate Slacker, Ringer T-shirt Hipster Trend (YABTPLBTRSKONYPGSRTHT).

 You know that Cure song, "In Between Days", where they try to sound like New Order? That's what they sound like, at least to me (based on the one song I've heard.) |
why have I not heard of this band...

I purchased the cd a few months ago (from Insound), and for once, I like something 'indy' that Pitchfork lauds. I think its a fairly simplistic, noise layered sound...nothing horridly pretentious and cacophonous as The Fiery Furnaces. |
The album is uniformly excellent. Sort of a combination of Modest Mouse and mid period Talking Heads. I actually like them better than Modest Mouse. Pretty much every song is great. Definitely in my top 5 for the year. Getting great reviews:
http://www.metacritic.com/music/arti...urhandssayyeah Highly recomended. |
I seen them play in nyc a couple of times and I really like them and I am picky music listener, yeah pitchfork has a hard on for the band, but oh well..I think the band is still good. To me the singer kinda sounds like Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes nature..the music moves between talking heads, lou reedish, other band influences mixture. I expect them to be as big as the Arcade Fire soon.
By the way this band is getting played all over Woxy.com, Cincinatti based internet radio station. They are a hell of a lot bigger than the hipster NY scene. Songs |
I listened to three songs on their site and they sounded purty darn good.
Maybe I'll check them out. wenders-go for a drive and see them up north a few days early! |
That band name is way too damn long.

Tell that to And you will know us by the Trail of the Dead.

I saw them the other day in Philly, and they were decent, not worth all the hype.
|
Listen to the album. Maybe they haven't honed their live act yet.
|
chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw chasaw...with their sex, and their drugs, and their rock n', rock n', rock n' rock n' roll, hey!
...ummm...at least I think that's what the guy says |
I was wondering when someone would start a thread about these guys!
The album has been in constant rotation for me for the past few months. Upon first listen, there is an immediate Talking Heads-like sound (I often get a "Is this the Talking Heads?" when people overhear the album). Speaking of Talking Heads...I saw CYHSY play a free show at NYC's South Street Seaport last week, and I happened to notice David Byrne standing in the crowd during their set, taking it all in...not sure how he felt about the band, though...but they were quite good. |
based on pitchfork's drooling, i actually ordered the album from the band. it's pretty darn excellent. i think i'll definitely have to go see them live. they could be the next big thing!

Great album, except for the first track.
|
w00t!
Thread takes off. and BDB's last couple of albums have been brilliant. the man's a genius and if you haven't seen him live then you can't understand, he is an acquired taste of course. |

I've heard the album several times, it's decent too, I just don't get all the hype they are getting. This is coming from a huge talking heads fan btw. Magnolia Electric Co. blew them away at the show in Philly, I'm glad the show thinned out after all the people who paid $10 to see a 40 minute set of CYHSY left. |

I would've stayed. Wusses. |
A poorly edited but funny vid

I just got this cd. I don't really get all of the Talking Heads/Arcade Fire comparisons. On a couple of songs the guy sounds like David Byrne but the music doesn't sound like Talking Heads to me. And I don't get The Arcade Fire comparisons at all except I think I heard a marimba on one song. To me they sound like a bit of The Killers and Modest Mouse. Not as pop as the killers but not as weird or interesting as Modest Mouse.
But I really like the cd. Their show in atlanta sold out really quickly, before I even knew who they were. |
I see the Talking Heads comparison strictly based on the lead singer sounding like Byrne at numerous points. I hadn't heard them compared to Arcade Fire but that's pretty odd. I wouldn't associate the two at all. Unless people were saying that CYHSY are this year's Arcade Fire as the "it" band if you will?
|
i think the talking heads comparisons come from the quirky sound of the music, with the keyboards and guitar play. i like the band, but the singer's voice is very grating and sounds nothing like byrne.
|
I got this through a friend's reccomendation, and just don't see what all the hype is about? I'd thrown this one in the same lot as Wolf Parade, which also, did absolutley nothing for me.
I'm not saying that I think it's bad, or anything - but they're just not my bag, and I don't get what all the fuss is about. Is it just because they are (or are supposed to be) 'so different'? What am I missing? Maybe it's just that I prefer my music with a bit more melody, to be a little less chaotic, and have a singer who actually sing. Then again, as much as I could appreciate the Talking Heads, I never thought much of David Bryne, either. I'd be curious to know how they hold up live, as sometimes, THAT is the element that is missing. |
They're really good live. Some people compare them to Neutral Milk Hotel, which I think is a lot more fitting.
They play again in a couple of days... :) |
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
This band is really an amazing group of indie rockers. The lead singers voice is very unique. They made and produced thier own album without a record company. They are becoming kinds of the indie rock world. Anyone know them? I can't stop listening to thier album.

from pitchfork:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Announce American Tour Amy Phillips reports: Doesn't it seem like every other time you walk into a "hip" restaurant, boutique, or record store lately, they've got the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album on the stereo? And are NPR and the New York Times required by law to mention the band at least once a week now or something? Well, everybody's current favorite bootstrap-raising success story is only going to seep even deeper into the national subconscious, as they have just announced the itinerary for their first-ever American headlining tour. (No pesky National to steal their thunder this time.) It will kick off March 6 in frontman Alec Ounsworth's hometown of Philadelphia, wind its way down south for a little Langerado and SXSW action, head west and back, all in time to end up in the band's adopted home of New York City in mid-April. As previously reported, the band's self-titled debut comes out January 23 in the UK courtesy of Wichita, with the album's second British single, "In This Home On Ice", due February 20. They'll support the album's release with a European tour in February. NEWPORT!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!1
I'm IN. April 5TH. Brilliant. |
I've only heard the "Yellow Country Teeth" song on the radio. The guy's voice is frickin' annoying, with all that abrasive whining and his voice actual cracks a couple of times. I don't know how they OK'd that take in the studio...

A very overrated band, IMO. The Canadians seem to own this particular brand of post-punk these days. Wolf Parade and Arcade Fire are the real deal. |
