Wow, I had completely forgotten about that one. My friend had that and we used to listen to it alot. That was actually my first exposure to the songs from West Side Story.

This thread is lame, pick up a copy of Maximum Rock N Roll from your newstands if you want to hear some good new punk rock. They cover hardcore, garage (past two years, a stronger focus on this), pop, art, but they have been covering less Street punk now that it comes to mind. I remember 5 years ago when I got my 1st copy and it said, "If you don't own the first D.O.A. album you are a fucking retard." That was a nice wake-up call to someone who mostly listened to what you kids are calling punk. Granted, D.O.A. records sell a whole hell lot but doesn't push numbers like NOFX or anything on Fat Wreck and maybe just a little more than TKO. Maximum Rock N Roll does a shit ton of reviews, scene reports from across the world like Iran to North Korea and odd places like that, great columns, and etc. etc. They sometimes frown upon bands that are on the Warped Tour, well, it seems like they are getting to the point about not caring so much anymore and plus the stuff you guys listen to is some of the stuff these guys started listening to like Murphy's Law or whatever you kids said.

P.s. Kids who are watching Taking Back Sunday with their Victory hoodies on MTV should listen to what is real emo-punk like Ten Grand or something of that nature.

P.s.s. I like the fact that Victory is not owned by a major and still pushes music that kids still want to listen to like how the last 6 records or whatever had sold like 60,000 copies each in its first week (And I think Taking Back Sunday pushed like 130,000 in its first week of sales).

P.s.s.s. Kids who listen to old punk should start out the No Thanks! boxset released by Rhino then check out the Killed by Death comps and kids into power pop should get the Power Pearls comps. I think these aren't officially released anymore but might be booted. At least the Power Pearls is. The later volumes of Power Pearls start to get iffy by adding non hard to find stuff like the Undertones or what not.

P.s.s.s.s. Bands like Thrice and Billy Talent are like boy bands. Granted, I like listening to "Justified", I am just saying they are the same thing.

P.s.s.s.s.s. Buy a record player so you can get 7"s because they are the greatest plus unless their collectiables, LPs are cheaper than CDs.

P.s.s.s.s.s.s. Learn to mail order.

P.s.s.s.s.s.s.s. That Saints album is good. I would tell all to check that out.

Yes.. anything that sells a lot is neither punk nor good...

Ramones
The Clash

You're right!

P.S. I've been listening to punk in one form or another for 11 years.
P.S.S. How the hell is a band like Thrice like a boy band? I'd like to see any boy band write lyrics like Thrice.
P.S.S.S. If you can't tell by now, I absolutely hate the elitist attitude in music, especially "punk" music.

Let's compare lyrics:

Maximum Rock N Roll's darling, "Human Certainty"'s
THE SCARLET LETTER

Shunned by mob mentality and branded by the flock of masquerading, posturing, jargon spouting fucks. Deliberated by the village idiots. Sentenced to excommunication by a fucking buzzword verdict. Because if the community says it, it must be true. How can anyone be wrong in a community of free thinkers? Party line robots. Domineering dolts with delusions of grandeur not unlike the pope. Ostracized and quarantined. Tantamount to leprosy. It does not take a badge to be a cop or a bible to be a christian. Self-appointed leaders that say they want no leaders will lead you to enlightenment because they’re so much smarter. Because they’re so much wiser. Slander any name at any cost. The true believers further their cause in the interest of the community that they claim to represent. Anyone led into something will be led right back out.

Thrice's
"A Torch To End All Torches"

Misguided satellite
I circle by habit,
can't find my orbit to save my life
I want to fall,
I want to burn,
like an ignorant craterless meteorite
Long ago I was derailed,
long ago the mission failed
but in the distance there appears a light

Disgruntled architect
building a palace
cant make it perfect to save my life
victimless crime ride the wrecking ball in
evacuate now while I breathe dynamite
Efforts all to no avail
I'm perfection's countervail
torn in pieces, I am made contrite

And in my darkest hour
the brightest light draws near to me
a torch to end all torches,
this is the light that sets me free
all shadows burn away now
but by his grace I am sustained
though all was lost,
now all is found and more is gained

Lift me up and make me whole
Instill in me a new hope
Breathe new life into my soul

The punk 'elitests' are almost as bad as the metal 'elitests'. While I'm sure it's difficult to see your genre get watered down and massively commercialized, there are still good bands coming out today that are punk.
Hell, the OP specifically asked what is cool with the kids these days. That alone could incorporate all of the groups listed above.

I'm still getting into punk myself, and am starting with the more popular groups, finding their influences, and digging deeper.

My current favorites:

Dropkick Murphys
Social Distortion
Bad Religion
Bad Brains
Descendants
Rocket From The Crypt

This year's releases worth getting:

Adolescents - The Complete Demos 1980-1986
Well worth the price of admission for the inclusion of the original version of Richard Hung Himself!

Adolescents - OC Confidential
The first new album from the core group since 1987. And they pick up right where they left off. This album is really surprising. Great stuff.

Shattered Faith - Bootleg
No new material here, but Shattered Faith finally gets a proper CD release.

Okay, I don't know what to call them anymore, Punk,Emo,SKa,etc.. But so far, Finch has been one that I've enjoyed listening to. The Used, Senses Fail, Yellowcard, Red Vendetta, The Starting Line. And then their's Punk Pop, Good Charlotte, and Simple Plan.

C'mon, I said I even listened to a freakin' Justin Timberlake record, I really don't give a shit about about status. I had Green Day at #7 on my top 500 albums of 2004 even. Thrice are just poster-boys. Whatever. They can still be good but they are just this generation's boy bands with them taking over the teen market. Hey, I am glad you have been listening to some form of punk for 11 years but too bad your punk is shit!! Just kidding, I don't give a fuck how long you have been listening to punk for. I guess I was 8 or so when I got my first Ramones and Clash records so does that make it 14 years for me? I really don't care anyways like I was punk when I was 8. That is just fucking silly unless my parents where Lydia Lunch and Richard Hell. Lyrics don't matter anyways. Punk is suppose to be an attitude and lifestyle, not a genre of music. I put that in bold because that is the most important thing in this rant of some sort. BTW, the Clash is way overrated, the self titled record is ok but London Calling and after is just boring classic rock and the Ramones, jesus chirst, they should have stopped making records after "End of the Century" and some people argue that record sucks ass. Sorry for you to take offensive that I said Thrice sucked or mentioned that they were a boy band or whatever but that is just what I think. Now listen to your Drive-Through records or something.

I took offense to your general attitude. There is a lot of music I don't like, but I don't generally come into threads bashing people's opinions and taste in music.

I like some bands off of Drive-Thru. What's wrong with that... Oh, I'm sorry, they're not punk enough.

The whole -- "Punk is an attitude and a lifestyle" thing is so cliched. Punk was music long before some small group of people tried to put some kind of image constraints on it.

Yep. I remember the relentless bashing Green Day got when "Dookie" came out! Man, that was brutal! I thought I was the only one in the scene that liked that album!

By the way, if you're (that's a general "you", not to The Bus) into "pop punk", why don't you check out the Queers, Screeching Weasel, Methadones (that's a good newer punk band for the original poster to check out), Squirtgun, Descendents, All, and the Parasites rather than Good Charlotte, Blink 182, & Sum 41?

It's not even that they are fanatics. It's that they think their definition of punk is right and everyone else is a dumbass if they don't agree.

Yeah, I know and don't care. I listen to music I like and don't worry about whether the bands have sold out or not. Ramones are probably my favorite band ever and no one wanted to be successful more than those guys. They would have been happy to sell albums the way Green Day does.

Let's keep this thread on track. I didn't start this discussion to find out who is the punkest DVDTalk member. I just want recommendations -- I don't care if the band is commercial or not.

Basically, if you like "old punk" like The Clash and such, you aren't going to like anything that's out today. For goodness sake, not even Rancid sounds like that anymore. Punk is a different game now, if you enjoyed the older stuff, why not go for some of the mail order stuff the one poster suggested or find the back catalog of the many underground punk bands of that time period. However, if you are into pop-punk/emo you'll find more than enough of that from the music that comes out today. You win either way, but those bashing one or the other need to get over themselves.

I'm not one for the whole "what is/isn't punk" debate, but none of these bands strike me as punk in any sense of the term. Sure, they're all great bands in their own regard, but the style of music they play isn't punk to me. Though I would give Thrice and Brand New my highest recommendations for good music in general. And Taking Back Sunday's first album was quite enjoyable too.

Also, IMO Rancid hasn't put out a good album since 98. I realize I'm in the minority and a lot of people really liked Rancid 2000, but good god, Indestructible was awful.

To the OP: Just out of curiosity, have you checked out any bands that have been recommended so far? If so, what ones have you liked?

I was going to mention The Methadones and totally forgot! Their first two albums are great, I haven't heard their latest thought that came out last year. I saw them open up for The Queers and they were great live.

THE DESCENDENTS, I just can't say enough good about them. The early albums up to No/ALL before they originally broke up are classic. Two things at once is pure punk goodness. Enjoy is not as strong, but good emo/pop punk before it was a buzz word or a freakin' image. No/All is just classic, in a class by itself, not really punk, not really hard core, just pure goodness.

No one has mentioned The Four Eyes? our new Cd is on a label that Against Me put out sutff on (www.plan-it-x.com. i have no idea what against me sounds like but i'm guessing we sound different.
Its good to see people mention Mitch Cardwell's MRR column since he (likes my band and) is a nice guy.
I still want a copy of Punk Side Story. I see Dave Mello (schlong/op ivy drummer) around ever few months but always forget to see if he has anymore copies of it.

other new bands people might like:
Teenage Bottle Rocket
Enemy You
The Bananas
The ergs

The punk sound is a little hard to pin down though. I mean everything from MC5 to the Ramones to the Descendents to Rancid and Black Flag are all considered punk. I guess you could call Taking Back Sunday and Brand New emo, but even emo has its foundations in punk -- but they could also be called pop-punk. I guess you could call Thrice something like metal emo-core or something... I dunno. But I think all could be said to have a punk sound or at least punk-influenced.

Opinion are like assholes...

Really though, I wasn't a big fan of Rancid 2000 (I liked it and liked several songs, but overall its not my favorite), but I loved Indestructible. What wasn't that you didn't like? I thought it was very reminiscient of "...And Out Come the Wolves"

But he also mentioned buying recent NOFX and Bad Religion albums -- both bands have been around for awhile, but their more recent albums tend to be more "new punk."
