First, the obvious question is why do it? Next, do they actually go through and type everything that is on the thing? I have like 40 gb on mine and wouldn't want to type it all out. Is there some special way to do that?

There's a program to rip your tracklisting and put it up on the net.

Yes, I want to know exactly which Dream Theater and Rush tracks you have.

You just did a great disservice to the word "bad" by linking it to Dream Theater and Rush. Grab a dictionary and look up "fucking horrible". I think that's more like it.

For a second I thought you were going to defend Dream Theatre...

To answer the why question. Its just a way to show others what kind of music youre into. I like the idea and ironically clicked on one of those things from another members sig.

tunes2html is the app that creates an html file of your iPod contents.
I have mine out there because I am always sharing music with my friends, and rather than emailing each other asking "Do you have this? Do you have that?", we can just check one another's lists online.

I've never understood it either. If I couldn't find a particular song on kazaa or whatever, I used to type the song name and .wav or mp3 or whatever. My search results would just be someone's txt file of their music collection.

I think it would make private file sharing so much easier if I knew what you had to trade and you knew what I had. "I'll trade you A Change of Seasons for Tom Sawyer." is much better than anonomously logging into to some share network to get some download of unknown/dubious quality.
Not that I condone any file sharing which would incite the wrath of RIAA.
