U2 Concert in San Jose was suh-weet, didn't get into the ellipse thing, but still about 5 people back from the edge of the ellipse so awesome..
Small vid clip. http://www.bdbfc.com/video/u2.avi and a pic of pope bono. http://www.bdbfc.com/video/bono.jpg I had the video link messed up.. |
Hey, guys, I'm going to show the Phoenix Friday night, and in trying to plan the whole meeting of friends stuff, I'm trying to get a sense of the show's schedule. I have GA tickets, but won't be able to get there super early (recognizing that the best seats in the ellipse are assigned randomly anyway). So if any of you who've already seen the show can tell me...
1. What time did you get there? 2. How full was the GA section then? 3. What time did Kings of Leon start? 4. How full was the GA section then? ... I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance. |
Sure.
Its weird. I had the FAN tickets, yet at San Jose there was no seperate fan line. Its a lottery once you get in the door as to whether you get in the ellipse or not I got there at 5pm and stood in line for about 90mins. I was about 500 in line at that point. Got in, not in the ellipse, went and had something to eat, and at 7 went down to the floor and You can see from my pic above how close I got to the outer Ring of the ellipse The left hand side is the best I think, Bono comes down there most. but as close to the middle as you can. KOL came on at 7:30, played till about 8:20 and u2 came on at 9. |
Bump in case anybody has reports from tonight's Phoenix concert.
BadlyDrawn, thanks for your comments. |
The funny thing I think about with all those fans at U2 shows is that many of them are so oblivious to what the words actually mean. I had this guy in back of me, who was annoying the hell out of me, by cussing(he was drunk) and making a fool out of himself. Then when "Streets Have No Name" came on, he started singing along, and again acting like an idiot. Most people I have talked to, don't even know that the song is about Heaven, and is taken very much from the Bible. Its about finally being free from opression, from race, from sick from poor and being in Heaven with Christ, which is all that matters. It just makes me laugh when so many people don't get the sublte undertones of what Bono is speaking about. That my friends is part of the musical journey there. Not just to be entertained.

Yeah , well, you know that's just like your opinion man

BadlyDrawn, thanks for your comments. They opened with "Love and Peace Or else", and then went straight into "Vertigo". They did a rocking version of "Electric Co" into "An Cat Dubh". The only song I think they did differently than elsewhere on the tour was "Zoo Station", I don't think they've played it yet. "One" was a highlight. Wish I was going tomorrow night too :( |

I think you're overlooking an important view here. Sure, U2 has made no secret of the influence of God and religion in their music. But all art is interpretation, and no one can say what a song is 'about.' Sure, Bono may have been talking about heaven, but unless he comes out and sings 'where the streets in heaven have no name and I'm dining with Jesus and we're talking about the holy spirit, blah, blah, blah,' that's NOT what the song is about. It's what the song was influenced by. The song is about what I say it's about, what you say it's about, what the drunk behind you say's it's about. The way Bono and other artists leave things open for different views is what makes what they do art. Otherwise they should just hit us in the head with a Bible and get it over with. |

It caused thetradersden and Interference to both shut down because of the traffic. http://www.u2preservation.com/junk/0...sDen-Front.jpg Weren't they gonna put all the shows up on iTunes or something? Are they still planning on doing that? |
Well, doesn't look like the iTunes thing is gonna work out. I was there for both Phoenix shows, got in the Elipse night one, and taped night two. (GA)
I've been to 32 U2 shows and PHX2 was the closest I've ever been... http://www.thevertigotour.com/images/DSC00361med.jpg |
Chris, that's an awesome shot. Sweet!
|
That picture ROCKS - thanks for posting it.
I just found out a few days ago that I'm going to the MSG show on 5/21 - I'm just glad now that I don't have to wait until October to see them. |
I have just one question, how does one get a freaking camera into the concert when the tickets specifically said NO CAMERAS OR RECORDERS? I was rejected at the gates when I was there was my camera. To make a long story short, I was extremely pissed to find out once I went through all the trouble to drop my camera off at home, some people got in with their cameras and flashed away.
|
at the U2 concerts you are allowed to take in non-pro cameras, anything with a long lens will be take off you.
Disposables and compact digitals are fine. Posters were all up outside the venue in SJ stating as much. |
Bump for the Chicago shows.
I put 3 short video clips from the above concert on my Vertigo Page http://www.thevertigotour.com |
i should add that i felt the second show in seattle was great. while the elevation tour was nice, this one blew me away. massive production, excellent sound, and they were energetic as hell. i've never paid this much for a concert ticket in my life ($160), but i feel it was worth it. and hey, they played vertigo twice. i found it amusing.

Chrisedge, what camera do you own, those pictures are crystal clear. My pics are all dark and/or fuzzy, but it's a compact camera, so I wasn't expecting much. The videos the camera took turned out really good picture-quality wise, the sound obviously was a bit tinny.
I saw the show last night, enjoyed it enough, does seem to lack inspiration, I don't know exactly, maybe they needed the glitz and giant screens of the old tours. |

Many blurry or so-so pictures in the bunch. |
Thanks for the info! Any particular picture setting that worked better for you? I tried many different settings (night mode, fireworks, indoor party(?), dusk, auto) on my camera, and all were terrible. Low-light modes were very blurry, regular modes were very dark. Funny thing is that the videos looked great and is how I'd like the pictures to look, but at a high resolution, so it may be user error on taking the pictures.
|
I had varying luck between flash and no flash. I was close enough for no flash, but the higher shutter speeds with the flash seemed to help with getting a higher shutter speed.
All the camera geeks need not suggest anything for me, I borrowed the camera IN the arena, and had no time to figure out how to do ANYTHING on it. :) I liked the camera enough to want to buy one, but will try out a few before I decide on my next digital. The MP4 video capability is pretty cool too. |
I have tickets for September, so I think I'll get a nicer digital camera before then, perhaps the Canon S2 IS, which according to dpreview is supposed to handle low light very well. And the 12x zoom will be really nice to have. The Canon S2 is quite a bit larger than the current Nikon Coolpix 5200 I have, but it should still fit easily in a coat pocket to sneak into the concert.

saw the show last night
|
I went to the September 12th show in Toronto and it was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.
They have also changed their playlist a little bit from what Chrisedge indicated at the beginning of this thread. They played old favorites like "I will follow", "With or Without You" and "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" which was my personal highlight for me. Plus we were able to surprise Bono with singing along with him especially on "One" where he kept uttering "Wow" a couple of times. |
For anybody interested, here is the set list for the Toronto show:
Spoiler:
|
Can't wait for next week for the return of U2 to Chicago.

nov 11 can't come soon enough!

Saw them at MSG tonight. Awesome show and they topped the encore list with Wild Horse and finished with With or Without You. As those are my favorite two songs (Wild Horses #1) I was estatic. I doubt I could go to another 10 shows and hear Wild Horses played again.
|
I did end up buying the new Canon S2 IS camera, and it performed flawlessly at the Chicago show I saw a couple weeks back. Here are some of the pictures I took, no touch-up other than shrinking them down in size and extra jpeg compression. I had 8th row seats off to the side, but you can see below with the 12x zoom, I had no problem getting very close pictures.

Nice Pixs....I updated my posts above since the website I had them on was closed...
|
Saw them for the first time last night in Philadelphia. Awesome show. The biggest highlight of the evening though was the Boss, Bruce Spingsteen, coming out to sit in on People Get Ready!! Bruce's wife Patti Scialfa came out and sung harmony.
From what everyone was saying on the radio on the way home, they thought this was the best show of the 4 in Philly. |

I'm going tomorrow night for the first of the DC shows. I have crappy tickets though. Oh well it should still be a good time since I'm going with a bunch of friends who have never seen U2 before. I just hope it's not like last tour and I pick the wrong night of the two and miss 40 somewhere in all the encores.

I need to find my tickets for november, I just realised I can't locate them that will not be pleasant
