recommend me some 'Orchestral Pop' bands.

Other the weekend I was listening to some CD's from my collection notably

  • The Divine Comedy
  • My Life Story

and while they could be best described as 'orchestral pop': string section, horns, etc. I was wondering what other bands use or implement this style.

    ?

I'm a huge Divine Comedy fan, so I've been trying to find similar bands for years. My own suggestions would be Scott Walker's first four solo records from '67-70, and for a more contemporary band, check out Cousteau.

Check out XTC's "Apple Venus, Vol. 1", even though that's not representative of the band's overall sound.

ABC's "Lexicon of Love" is a masterpiece of lush, orchestral pop.

Just out of curiosity, when you're talking about The Divine Comedy, is there a group by this name, or are you referring to Milla Jovovich's album by that name?

As far as my input, Prince has done some interesting work at different times with composer Clare Fischer. His song "Pink Cashmere" is IMO a beautifully done song; also the original version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" from the 1985 album by the Prince off-shoot group The Family...if you can find it.

Also check out the third section of Extreme's album III Sides To Every Story, titled "Everything Under The Sun". Great piece of music.

not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but I'd suggest:
Matthew Good Band - Beautiful Midnight (get the Canadian import if you're in the US. trust me)
    Matthew Good - Avalanche
as both of those have a fair amount of orchestral stuff on some tracks, while maintaining a "rock" sound.

If you're looking for something that's more orchestral, and less pop, there's:
Godspeed You Black Emperor (any of the albums or EPs)
Explosions in the Sky (two albums available and the Friday Night Lights OST)
