I personally think the term "emo" is as overused as the term "grunge" was in the 90's (I remember a point in time when people were calling Collective Soul and Hootie "grunge"). Many of the groups being called "emo" today would've just been called "pop punk" a decade ago. I don't get why Blink 182 were considered "pop punk" but Fall Out Boy are "emo". Musically and imagewise it's the same thing, just a different generation. Most of these "emo" acts are Weezer clones anyways, they weren't considered emo in the 90's. When I think emo, I think Dashboard Confessional.

i don't really think there are any emo bands left, it's kinda all pop punk now
even when the emo term got huge..with i guess dashboard confessional (acoustic style) it wasn't really that prevalent in the scene as it used to be.. i guess i am thinking more..sunny day real estate, mineral, and fugazi type stuff..fallout boy is just pop to me. I guess maybe cursive is still kinda emo I think. But they've been around for awhile. |

My cousin - about a decade younger than me - has some some "screamo" song as his ringtone. I heard it once and that 30 second clip was enough for me to deem that whole subgenre Freakin' Unlistenable. |
