Name this Bruce Springsteen song?

What is the title of the song he did with Michael Stipe in the Vote For Change Tour?

Tonights the night for lovers.

Patty Smith? I must have missed that one, because I thought it was 10,000 Maniacs who made that famous on Unplugged.

If by "made famous" you really mean "completely ruined", then you are correct.

I guess Hollowgen's wording confused me. He said Bruce penned it and Patti Smith made it famous. I've never heard a Patti Smith version of the song, and the Maniacs version is the one you heard on the radio all the time. I never said it was a "good" version, just the more famous one.

i guess we might have to agree to disagree? i vaguely remember that 10,000 maniacs version. it's the smith version i remember best. and i've always known that it was a collaboration with the boss.

If you were old enough to listen to the radio in the late 70's you would have heard Patti Smith's version hundreds of times.

I fail to see the relevance in this. She's one of the most influential figures in the development of rock music. Her physical appearance is inconsequential.

wendersfan,

Looks and willing to wear slutty clothes trumps actual musical talent when teens choose what albums to buy anymore.

I guess so. I had no idea you were not being serious. Sorry about that.

Bruce has been playing this since around 1978. The lyrics have changed a bunch over the years. The version he plays now is closer to the Patti Smith version than the original lyrics.

dstrauss - sort of.
There have been minor lyrical changes over the years, but it's been recognizably Bruce's lyrics. On the VFC tour, though, he performed it -- for the first time -- with the Smith lyrics. It was performed as a duet with Michael Stipe, who knew the Smith words... they went for it.

Sounds like a couple of the posters are a decade or so apart based on the artists who they remember the song from
