That's truly sad to hear, its like the last nail inthe coffin...I grew up in the DC area and used to enjoy the station just prior to moving down to Fl. ( 1998) Though most of our stations down hear suck, particualrly for music ( We do have some good talk radio, most of the time.) Well until I can afford XM, I can at least say that we have good alternative music on the weekends (104.1) particularly Sunday Nights...

Apparently there was a massive protest against the HFS programming change in DC today. Well, if you count 30 people as massive.

This sucks.
They did the same thing here a year ago, only it was a fairly new (owned by Citadel but on the air for about a year and a half) truely alternative station. They played old stuff and new, and Tyson Meade - lead singer of Chainsaw Kittems and one of my favorite bands - was a dj, it was awesome, except they had some crappy morning show from Detroit so I never listened in the morning drive. Upon going home I switched it over and it is all spanish, I wanted to scream, no warning, just poof!! I think they were stealling ratings from the Citadel's big Rock station and they did not want this for some reason.

105.7 is broadcasting as WHFS here in Baltimore. I don't know about DC though.

No, it is just HFS on weekdays starting @ 7PM - 3AM and all weekend. Stern, Out to Lunch (they should replace these guys with the Sports Junkies) and Don and Mike are still on.

The guys who did Out to Lunch accepted jobs in Seattle...the guys on now are totally new...the rumor has been that the Junks would take over that slot...but who knows.

From DCRTV.org

"Still No Deal For Junks At 105.7 - 1/24 - A local radio source tells DCRTV: "Weird stuff going on at Baltimore's Live 105.7. Check it out and the Junkies discussion right now (Monday at 11 AM-ish) on 106.7 (WJFK-FM). Apparently the Junkies had a deal to go on 105.7, but the station changed its mind and is airing its own homemade 'Out To Lunch' show with new hosts. Junkies are miffed and confused." Radio And Records on 1/24 reports what DCRTV told you on 1/14, that previous "OTL" hosts Miles Montgomery and Steve Hill are moving to Seattle for a radio gig there. The new "OTL" tryout hosts include Maynard from WQSR's "Rouse And Company" show. Last week, the Junkies resurfaced in the midday slot on WJFK-FM, after getting bounced from the morning gig at the now Spanish WHFS. Live 105.7 now airs alternative rock from old WHFS from 7 PM to 3 AM weekdaily, and on weekends. Former HFSer Tim Virgin has been heard doing evenings, with Neci, "Big O," and Lisa Worden, former HFS programmer, possibily joining the "HFS on 105.7" team. All of the above stations are owned by Infinity....."

It was also mentioned that there would still be an HFStival this year

even though i listen to 80% latin music while in the car, i, too, abhor this change. the buzz was a bit too trendy/alternative with the same damn_playlist every five minutes. KLOL was the only place i could get hard, good music as well as metallica and other old favs (loved mandatory metallica and the pit). it doesnt help that all the other spanish stations already play a shitpop of reggaeton. but, somehow in that switch, 107.9 switched to some crazy techno crapola at night. blah.

yeah, The Post has an article about this today, one thing it points out is that it will most unlikely not be at RFK Stadium (since baseball will have started at that point).

they did this one year but the station said at the time because hfs didn't have a big enough following in baltimore.

No way the Ravens would let their field get destroyed like that so close to the start of the season.

they usually hold the festival in may, which is still 4 months before the season, and its now turf.

Well, there's some good news for Houston. 97.5 launched today, and although I missed it, they've apparently brought in much of the KLOL talent and format.

well according to the Post article your theory is kind of wrong, it stated that the majority of concertgoers where from the Baltimore area.

Wow...

" "There exists a tremendous opportunity for Infinity to launch a Spanish language format in Washington, D.C., where almost 10 percent of the population is not being directly served," said Infinity President Joel Hollander in a statement."

I love idiots like this. Same thing happened in my area a few months ago. Ohhhhhh, 10 percent. What about the other 90 percent?!

Re: So long WHFS...

Talk about random gone, random back. My friend sent me the following today:

August 1, 2011
CBS Radio brings heritage Modern Rocker WHFS back to the airwaves in Baltimore, re-launching the station today at noon on 97.5 FM and WWMX 106.5 HD-2. The station had been kept alive on HD Radio and online, but is now re-launching with a full airstaff, focusing on 90's classic Modern Rock from acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighers and more. The station debuted with Smashing Pumpkins' "Today."
CBS is bringing back classic 'HFS jocks Tim Virgin, Gina Crash, Neci, Jenn Marino and Chris Emery with Loveline airing weeknights from 10 p.m. to midnight.
SVP/Market Manager Bob Phillips stated, "The music made popular by HFS has lived on long after the station went off the air. HFS has built a loyal following online and now those listeners can have more access than ever before as we bring back one of Baltimore's well-known brands to radio stations across the dial. HD Radio Technology allows us to offer additional channels of programming alongside our over the air stations, and through a relationship with the owners of 97.5 we have this unique opportunity to expand the reach of the HFS programming."
'HFS can still be found online as well at www.HFS975.com.
The original WHFS flipped in 2005 to a Latin format.
It's amazing how much the music scene has changed and how we consume music since they went off the air. That summer I first subscribed to Sat radio and haven't gone back to terrestrial. Listening to Spotify now actually as well. Good news for the DJs and staff, but this may be too little too late from a CBS Radio perspective.

Re: So long WHFS...

The same thing happened to KNAC in Long Beach/Los Angeles 16 years ago. It was the best Hard Rock and Heavy Metal station in the world (seriously - it was generally accepted as the world wide leader in the genre when it came to commercial radio), and it was sold off and converted to Spanish language music.

This despite the station doing extremely well in the ratings for a low wattage station.

That was depressing.

I'm sure this was, too, for fans of that genre.

Nice to see they brought it back. I just wonder for how long.

Re: So long WHFS...

I'm sure they'll "stick" to the 90's alt rock that made the station famous (in this area) but i wonder if they plan in the long run to play newer stuff from those bands (w the chili peppers and the foo fighters w new albums and what not)

All Spanish music, eh?

So, just Plácido Domingo, Julio Iglesias, Aviador Dro, La Oreja de Van Gogh, etc.
