Saw Everclear last night

Looks like he has a whole new band. Art is the only one left, which I know he really is the band. Just seems like things are over for a band once they replace their lineup though. Still put on a fairly good show. The thing that really upset me though was that Everclear only performed for slightly under an hour and that included walking off and on the stage for two encores. Seems a little short for a headlining band. The opening band did about 45 minutes, almost as long as Everclear. Everclear should of had a longer set, they have the songs to do it. I don't even think they covered all the songs from their greatest hits cd that came out recently.

Wha? Where the heck did the other two guys go? Did Art fire them?

yeah, seriously! it's not like they could have possibly had "bigger and better things" to do with their erm, talents.

i think they probably should have just given up all together. haven't they been pretty hokey since so much for the afterglow? i don't think i know a single cut from anything after that. well, maybe some godawful song about volvos and soccer.

Are they out promoting a new album or something?

And for them to play for not even a hour is pretty weak.

I saw them at the House of Blues in Hollywood. They, or should I say Art, is promoting the greatest hits cd that came out in the begining of October, "10 years gone by" is the title I think.

I've read that they've left. Art sounded like he was sick of being around them, and at least one of them was pretty unhappy with the direction the band was moving in musically. Craig is playing with Tri-Polar, and Greg is playing with The Oohlas.

From one recent article:

Modern songwriting genius Art Alexakis has left his long-time Everclear mates -- drummer Greg Eklund and bassist Craig Montoya -- behind as he takes the band he founded back in his hometown of Portland, Ore., into its next decade of music making.

While that may sound harsh, Alexakis insists that the parting was a long time coming and was best for all involved. He also stressed the point that Craig and Greg were not original members, even though they had both been along for most of the band's ride from total obscurity to fame.

"I made a conscious choice about a year and a half ago that I wasn't really happy where the music was," said Alexakis of how the change in lineup came about.

"I wanted a more mature sound, a more singer-songwriter aspect. I still wanted it to rock, just not as bombastically. I wanted more textures, so I wanted a full-time keyboard player and I wanted to bring in a killer lead guitar player with a background in blues, rock and all sorts of stuff to broaden the sound."

Everclear's longtime rhythm section evidently did not share the vision of the group's singer-songwriter-vocalist-guitarist.

"I talked to them about it and they wanted to just go on and do other things. By the end of the last tour, we kind of got fed up with each other and we were clearly moving in different directions."

Well, it's not like Everclear is a top-tier band anymore either.

I don't quite get why you said Everclear should hang it up altogether, but that Craig and Greg shouldn't have left the band. Maybe they feel the same way you do.

I dunno, I really liked "Sparkle and Fade" and a smaller chunk of "So Much For The Afterglow", but I haven't felt motivated to pick up anything since.

Any headlining band that can't play at least an hour deserves to get their ass kicked.

Interesting. I think it would only be fair to change the name of the band though.

Art recorded under the name Everclear before Greg was in the picture, and this isn't exactly their first lineup change. Between that, the fact that it's always been Art as the driving force, plus the marketing angle (people might remember having heard Everclear singles on the radio; most probably have no idea who Art is without that label), I can see why he might want to stick with the name.

i think its funny/shitty that Art feels the need to have a pay section to the site like hes some webcamming diva or something. silly little shit like live photos can't be viewed without joining up for at least $25. i think its a bit pretentious to suck more money out of the people who have been interested in the band for a while now. lets face it, hes not gaining any new fans these days...a revamped line-up, no new record, not even a new single or comp track...what gives? i used to be a big EC fan back in the day but why the hell am i going to join up and pay money to view pictures and stupid assed little videos that used to be free on the old site, especially when i'm unsure about the lineup/format? what a primadonna.

ok...rant over.

and with that said i'd probably go see a EC show with the new lineup with the right openers and for the right price.

I saw Everclear here last month....was a decent show, but was rather short at about 50 minutes. They did play alot of the songs from the greatest hits cd, and a bunch of new stuff that Art says will be on a new cd sometime around March/April.

Overall was a good concert, though they were better other times i've seen them. Didnt play "santa monica" and pretty much ruined "Heroin Girl" this time around.
