I would say check out Against Me! They're a more straight-forward punk band out of Gainesville, FL but I'd say they have a similar sort of swagger to Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly (though significantly less Irish). Although, I'm not really a fan of either of the bands you mentioned, so I'm probably not the person to go to for advice.

But seriously. Check out Against Me! If you don't like them, I'll send you some cookies.

Check out the Street Dogs featuring the 1st DKM singer Mike Mcolgan also check out Blood or Whiskey for some good ol' Irish punk type stuff

I would say definately the Pogues. They are more Irish than punk, but I would say that flogging molly & dropkick murphys wouldn't exist without the Pogues' influence.

The Real McKensies. Hope I spelled that right. They're from Vancouver. VERY much like the DropKick Murphys, but Scottish. They got more acoustic songs, just as many rockin' songs, and a full time bagpipe player.

The Downs Family have a few CDs out. They're traditional Irish punk more like Flogging Molly than the Murphys. Been around longer than Flogging Molly.

The Scotch Greens are another band to check out. More acoustic based, but definitely punk. (They even do Misfits covers with an Irish punkish twist.) I think you can check them out at www.accidentprone.com

Both the Downs Family and the Scotch Greens are from San Diego, if that helps.

I'd recommend that you check out Black 47 . They are somewhat inconsistent in my opinion in terms of quality, but their live song "The Reels" from their Live in New York City CD is one of my all-time favorite instrumentals.

You may want to check out Great Big Sea or Carbon Leaf for a less punky, more poppy Irish sound. Great Big Sea is particularly good at this sound.

Also, definately check out Roaring Jack, but good luck finding any of their stuff. A great band from Australia in the '80s with a Scottish singer playing Pogues-inspired music. All their stuff is great and the earlier tunes are much more punk-influenced. The later stuff could kind of be labeled as a mix of The Pogues and Midnight Oil. Their complete discography is available as a 2-disc set, but it probably would have to be imported from Germany.

And, there's the best Irish band of all time, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS who sound just like The Clash, but in my opinion....were better. Yes, I said it!

I would not reccommend the Tossers. The music is decent, but the singer's forced-fake accent is just laughable.

I've heard some good stuff by a band called Neck, but haven't been able to track down any of their stuff. The band is comprised of former members of Shane MacGowan's Popes.

Anyways, I second/thrid/etc the choice of Stiff Little Fingers. One of THE best punk bands of all time. They even made the transition to "non-punk" 80's music pretty well.

Had to ressurect this thread for some stuff I've been listening to non-stop lately.

The Porters have a GREAT album out entitled A Tribute to Arthur Guinness. The band is from Germany but play only traditional Irish songs (except for the opening track). Really great stuff, somewhat similar to Dropkick Murphys but much, much, much more authentic. Their versions of "Irish Soldier Laddie", "The Leaving of Liverpool" and "The Green Fields of France" flat out kick ass.

All Pogues fans must check out The Greenland Whalefishers. This band is from Norway, and as odd as it may seem, the singer sounds exactly like Shane MacGowan! They have 3 full-length CDs out that sound like they could be lost Pogues albums from around 1987. VERY similar to earlier Pogues.

And the band Siobhan from Canada put out a great album entitled Welfare State a few months ago. Similar in style to Flogging Molly. All the tracks here are winners, pick it up now! You can listen to the first 2 minutes of each song on the CD here
