What are some songs that you listened to to get through tough times in your life?

We've had workout music threads and threads asking for music for when people are depressed or going through divorces.

How about songs that got you through tough times in your life?

I'll start - Mariah Carey's "Hero"

"Pep Talk" by the Descendents. Always great for after a break-up.

Second "Pep Talk". Also "Coolidge" (sp) from the same album. Doesn't get better than that.

Soul Asylum "Carry On" and "Sometime To Return" are another couple of classics that never fail.

Also the whole "Powerage" album by AC/DC is perfect when feeling down and out. It's all about having no money, relationships gone/going bad, "I'm a loser, but I ain't lost it.", but with rays of hope crashing through.

no offense, but that song does the direct opposite for me. in fact, that song makes me want to vomit blood.

janet jackson's "nasty boys" always puts me in a good mood though.

Depends on the situation.... but here are a couple..

"Sailing" - Christopher Cross
"Fallen" - Sarah McLachlan (helped me through a bad break up -- realized I was not the only one who screwed up ...)

No one here has heard of the band but I listened to Shoes non-stop for a week after breaking up with a three-year girlfriend. I'd been off to college for about four months and knew it was time to move on.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile. The whole record helped me through a rough time in high school when my mom got admitted the same week as it's release. It's been a major part of my life since. Tool's Lateralus is a very close second when dealing with the departure of my girlfriend after 4 years.

I got really depressed around 1993 when the likes of Pearl Jam, Tool, Nirvana and Chris Cornell ruined music with thier standing in one place and mumbling really slow about how sad they are and then I put in Poison's "Nothing But A Good Time", Motley Crue "Girls Girs Girls", KISS "Lick It Up", Bulletboys "Smooth Up" and Britny Fox "Girlsschool" and great stuff like that and remembered what real rock n roll sounded like and felt alot better.

Here are some suggestions that were given to me under the similar circumstances. Funny, but much of it I would never have considered prior to my "difficulty." That said, I'm still listening to them today. Good luck . . . and hang in there.

Jackson Browne: I'm Alive
Amy Grant: Behind The Eyes
The Jayhawks: Rainy Day Music
KD Lang: Ingenue
Magnolia: Soundtrack To The Film (Aimee Mann)
Frank Sinatra: In The Wee Small Hours
Til Tuesday: Everything's Different Now

Alice In Chains- Jar of Flies E.P.

Very theraputic for me in the sense that it draws out the emotions when I have something troubling on my mind.

Dolly Parton- Mountain Angel

Also brings out the emotions

I agree with the Descendents songs mentioned already too.

Norah Jones and The Sundays always manage to put a smile on my face when I'm driving to work.

This wasn't meant as a personal request, just a topic for conversation... but thanks for the sentiment

Some years back I got to hang out with Gary Klebe a few times as my buddy's band, 92 Degrees, was on their Black Vinyl label.

I have a cd by 92 Degrees (and most on that label).

Any stories? Nice/not nice, etc.?

Without a doubt, Gangstarr's "Moment of Truth", verse two.

Sometimes you gotta dig deep, when problems come near
Don't fear things get severe for everybody everywhere
Why do bad things happen, to good people?
Seems that life is just a constant war between good and evil
The situation that I'm facin, is mad amazin
to think such problems can arise from minor confrontations
Now I'm contemplatin in my bedroom pacin
Dark clouds over my head, my heart's racin
Suicide? Nah, I'm not a foolish guy
Don't even feel like drinking, or even gettin high
Cause all that's gonna do really, is accelerate
the anxieties that I wish I could alleviate
But wait, I've been through a whole lot of other shit, before
So I oughta be able, to withstand some more
But I'm sweatin though, my eyes are turnin red and yo
I'm ready to lose my mind but instead I use my mind
I put down the knife, and take the bullets out my nine
My only crime, was that I'm too damn kind
And now some skanless motherfuckers wanna take what's mine
But they can't take the respect, that I've earned in my lifetime
And you know they'll never stop the furious force of my rhymes
So like they say, every dog has it's day
And like they say, God works in a mysterious way
So I pray, remembering the days of my youth
As I prepare to meet my moment of truth
Before I heard this song and had certain events happen I never understood how people could say, "Your music changed my life" or whatever. This song is no masterpiece by any means, but it seemed to strike a chord.

The entire Love is Hell album by Ryan Adams was great whenever I was sad.

Shoes were a great band.

Not individual songs, but two albums - Quadrophenia helped me get through those angst-ridden adolescent years, and the third Big Star album helped me get through some depressive periods in my 20s.

When I need a pick up, Ill pop in Gin Blossoms 'New Miserable Experience' or Soul Asylums 'Grave Dancers Union'. Both remind me of the good times in HS.

Strong agreement.

I'm guessing I was the one who mentioned them when this thread was first started?
