Ryan Adams back on tour
Only a mini-tour really, got to see him Sept. 13 on a makeup date in Columbia, Mo.
He played 2 1/2 hours, was drunk for most of it (surprise), but he was really funny during all the talking he did during the show, and playing Mr. Rogers theme.
Jesse Malin joined him onstage.
Talked to Jesse outside and what a nice man he is. He had just finished his tour and said he wanted to be there to support his pal RA.
Walked out back during opening act for a breather and saw some stage people in the alley setting up. Then i saw a couple non-fan boys sitting there with no tickets. Ryan Adams was sitting there on a crate or something writing out his setlist. They had no tickets and would not go up to him to say hey because they said "We're not fanboys."
I responded by saying, "I have no problem being a fanboy and went over and chatted with Ryan for a couple minutes" A bouncer came out and handed him a drink while we chatted and he got warmed up for his return to touring.
He made a joke onstage "I should've stuck to the set wrist last time I played".
Got to hear a week-old song that was really good, something about I see you smile he said a lot during it.
I believe he played Memphis and Carolina somewhere since then. Anybody catch those shows??

Memphis and Atlanta.
I went to the Atlanta show. Here's the setlist, but he also played "Dear Chicago." I just don't remember where.
To Be Young
Anybody Wanna Take me Home
Love is Hell
When the Stars Go Blue
Please Do Not Let Me Go
Say My Name (? a new one?)
I Just Wanna See You Smile Back at Me
Oh My Sweet Carolina
50 States (although he only named Alaska)
Chin Up, Cheer Up
Why do they Leave?
Sylvia Plath
Amy
New York, New York
La Cienega
Look at me, I'm Crazy (lol)
Come Pick Me Up
encore:
new song
Don't Even Know Her Name
new song
new song
new song
new song
new song
Wonderwall
I would love to meet him, but I wouldn't want to come across as a groupie. So I won't meet male musicians without a male in tow.

This is probably a warm-up tour right now. Otherwise, I don't think it would be so short. He's probably just trying to see if he can handle a long-term tour. Judged by what I saw Wednesday night, I'd say no.

Yeah, he started Sylvia Plath but couldn't finish I think, he was quite messed up. THe encore of nothign but new stuff in a row was frustrating as well.
Still a lot of fun though.

The only Ryan Adams album I've heard is Demolition. I really like it. I'd have to say right now my fav song off of it is "Dear Chicago." What other albums would you guys recommend?

Heartbreaker is alt-country, Gold is early/mid-70s singer/songwriter influenced, Rock and Roll is, well, very rock sounding, and Love is Hell is like English mope-rock. My favorite remains Heartbreaker, but lately I've been listening to Rock and Roll the most.

I was going through today's "active threads", and when I noticed that Groucho had posted in a Ryan Adams thread, I immediately chuckled at the joke I already knew was there...

Can we refund Groucho's money and ask him to leave the thread?

I love Ryan to death, and he can be amazing live, but having been into Whiskeytown well before he went solo I just can't mentally get past thinking nothing he's done since then is as good as his stuff with the band. The Pre-pneumonia albums anyways.
He also embraces the "I'm a rock and roll rebel" persona way too much. And would it kill him to maybe play "Avenues" or "Houses On The Hill" or "The Battle And The War" in concert just once in awhile?

Yeah, judging from his between song banter, he was definitely high...and surprisingly engaging on stage. I loved Whiskeytown/Adams for years, but I'd been growing to hate him. His performance at ACL got me interested again.

And Jesse Malin is fantastic. I've already seen him twice this year, and am definitely looking to the third time when I see him in Chicago
(Will be my first Ryan show)

I saw him open for Alanis at the Hard Rock (I know there is a recording of mine floating around the net of that show) but didn't really get into him. What album should I start with?

I saw the St. Louis show recently.
Jesse Malin played an acoustic set, which was not suited to his strengths in my opinion.
Ryan Adams played about 5 or 6 "Heartbreaker" tunes and then proceeded to perform the show in chronological order by album. I've never seen that at a concert before and it was fun to watch.
Adams and Malin performed their "Nah Nah Nah" song together for the finale, with Jesse on vocals and RA on guitar/backup vocals.
