Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana...

I just heard this new song, called 1985 by a group called Bowling For Soup, and loved it on first listen. However, I got burnt by their last CD, which had the radio hit Girl All The Bad Guys Want, and didn't like not one other song on that album.

Girl All The Bad Guys Want wound up on a compilation disc (it might have been Totally 2003), and I realized I would have been better off just getting the comp for the song I knew to like.

I guess I will wait patiently to see if 1985 will wind up on a new compilation...

You can hear the whole album on the VH1 site. Didn't sound too bad. The best song is 1985 though.

It'll probably be on the next Now or Totally collection. There should be a new one out around November.

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of White Snakes car.

I am hooked on this song right now. It's what they call an earworm!

Wow..I actually think "1985" is actually a weaker song on the album..but love the song!
the song is actually an SR-71 song that Bowling for soup covered.

I think that Bowlings last album was phenomenal...not a bad song on it...

and alot of the new album was written and produced by the man, Butch Walker....

Another day and this song is still in my head
1985
by Bowling For Soup

Woohoo
Woohoo

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husbands a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happen to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of white snake’s car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
But she still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woohoo
(1985)
Woohoo

She's seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink
Even Saint Elmo's Fire
She rocked out to wham
Not a big Limp Biscuit fan
Thought she’d get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where’s the mini-skirt made of snake skin
And who’s the other guy singing in Van Halen
When did reality become T.V.
What ever happen to sitcoms, game shows
(on the radio there was)

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
But she still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woohoo

She hates time make it stop
When did Motley Crew become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop
Stop!
And bring back

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
But she still preoccupied
With 1985

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana

And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school

Bowling for Soup covered a song from SR-71? They're both kinda new, so it sounds strange to me that one new band would cover from another new band. I don't doubt it, but that's unusual.

SR-71's hit was Right Now - I suppose that they have cool songs in their catalog...I'll have to check it out.

» "1985"!!!!! 8/2004
GREAT NEWS!!! "1985" By now you all know that our song "1985" has been released by another band, Bowling For Soup. Well the great news is that it is BLOWING UP! It's a funny story how this came about. The lead singer and songwriter of BFS , Jaret Reddick, got a hold of "1985" from the new SR-71 CD HERE WE GO AGAIN and loved it and wanted to record it for their new CD, A HANGOVER YOU DON'T DESERVE. We were so flattered that we said hell yeah! He did a little work on it lyrically to make it more Soupish while they recorded it and the next thing you know - IT'S A HIT! We are so proud of those guys. The 2 bands have been friends for years. We met through a mutual friend, Butch Walker, who was producing their last CD at the time (the one with The Girl all the bad guys want) and actually produced this one as well. We've talked about working together for the last 5 years so this is a nice surprise. So don't forget, while you are requesting -- no make that DEMANDING "In Your Eyes" by Mitch Allan, throw in a shout for "1985" by Bowling For Soup.

1985 is now at #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, up five positions from last week. With any luck, the song will hit the Top 40 next week.

I guess this song is bigger - chart wise - than Girl All The Bad Guys Want, which didn't chart as far as I observed. Unless it came and went so fast I missed it. It was on the radio a lot, so I was surprised it wasn't a Top 10 contender.

This is ear candy. Whenever I sit down at my computer I have 1985 playing repeatedly. I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!!!
I think I 'll burn a cd with this song on it over and over and over for the whole cd.

I liked SR-71's Right Now song, but I've never heard their other songs. Has anyone here heard their 1985? How does it compare to Bowling For Soup's? Are any lyrics missing in the new version (ala Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds, which included only one version to Dylan's five). If you had to choose one over the other, which would it be?

Sorry, but it was old before I even heard it. I just don't get why everyone is digging this song. And I'm pretty open to a lot of stuff. I can understand why people like Ashlee Simpson more than I can understand why people like this.

Maybe cuz it namechecks a bunch of pop culture figures/movies that people will be able to relate to, therefore they have to love the song, right? Right? I'm sorry, I just don't get it.

Just heard the song and its pretty lame. I guess you have to be one of those people that went to high school in the 80s to love it. It just sounds like another Good Charlotte clone.

I think it's still funny after hearing it the 20th time. But maybe that's just me (I liked their "Drunk Enough To Dance" album, too).

They're like Blink 182 before they got "serious". Just harmless, funny pop music. Good music to drive to.
