Can Bloodhound Gang count as rap? I certainly love the tune...but I don't know if it's rap.
Hmm....when does rap stop being rap? Rage Against The Machine isn't rap, is it?...despite the fact that the vocalist raps. Where does it end?!?!?!??!?!?

To me old skool is mid 70's all the way up to 90.
Speaking of old skool
Does anyone know the name of the jam that's playing during the breakdance scene on Flashdance?? Where her and her friend are walking down a street and there are some dancers just getting down....I have no idea what that song is but I do like it. I think the last guy doing the dancing was Crazy Legs from RockSteady Crew but I am not sure

This would qualify as classic old-skool rap in my opinion. Anyone remember the rest? I would kill to see that commercial again.

(enter Isaiah) Maybe so, but that's not all, it let's Isaiah play like he's ten feet tall ...
(now i'm relying on memory for the sequence and lyrics)
(enter McHale) For the kind of moves that never fail, the Weapon's the choice of Kevin McHale ...
(enter Mark Aguirre) ... Mark Aguirre, when I wear Weapons i'm on fire ...
(enter Benard King) What can the Weapons do for King? Well, I can do just about anything (holding the Cons upside down)
(enter Larry Bird) Want to know what they did for me? I walked away with the MVP.
Something like that anyways.
But back to the topic at hand ...
When I think of old school rap I automatically think of:
Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock and Renegades of Funk. Awesome vid for Renegades of Funk by the way.
Kool Moe Dee - Do you know what time it is?
ATCQ - Can I kick it?
Digital Underground - Dowhutchalike (another great vid)
LL Cool J - Going back to Cali
EPMD - You gots to chill (love that Erick and Parrish Making Dollars - that's damn original)
Some other stuff from Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, Boogie Down Productions, Too Short, Big Daddy Kane ...
Oh, 2 Live Crew's HBC. (Michael J likes!)
Just for fun i'll crack open some 2 Live and crank it on the stereo ... when no one's around.
Anyone watch Rap City on MuchMusic back in the day with Michael whatshisname?

Ok, so I might be bringing up a REALLY OLD topic, but I don't care...I wanted to post.
Old school rap to me is the very first stuff...late seventies to late eighties. When the pioneers of rap were running free... Slick Rick, Grand Master Flash/Melle Mel (and the Furious Five), Dougie Fresh (and the Get Fresh Crew), Kurtis Blow, Newcleus, Sugar Hill Gang, Kool Moe Dee, UTFO, Mantronix, The Real Roxanne, Whodini, Africa Bambaataa, EPMD, LL, BDK, Eric B. and Rakim,... True old school is the stuff that still carries weight...Vanilla Ice?...NO WAY! WHO SAID THAT?!?!
A terrific movie that reflects upon old school rap is "Brown Sugar". What a trip back to the old days! Can't recommend this enough to those of you who aren't sure what old school is.
My favorites are
You gots ta chill
The Message
Children's story
Drop that Zero
Freedom
Goin' back to Cali
Friends
The Breaks
Rapper's Delight
Beat Streat
Jam on it
Planet Rock
One Love
Looking for the Perfect Beat
Get Stupid Fresh
Strictly Buisness
There are too many songs and too many rappers/groups to mention, let alone remember
Good Classics: Arabian Prince, DOC, BDP, 3rd Bass, MC Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock, Easy E, Dr. Dre (The Chronic), JJ Fad, Public Enemy, Paris, MC Eiht, Digital Underground, Pharcyde, Luniz, NWA, Compton's Most Wanted, Too Short, Ice T, 2 Live Crew, MC Lyte, Boss............on and on
Best Bass Album???? Kings of Bass by Bass Patrol --- Hands Down...it needs to come back in print!
And the kicker of it all people........
I'm a 31 yr old white woman....
oooohoooohoooo
.....didn't expect that did ya?
So I gotta give it up to Blondie for being the very first white female rapper EVER!!! on her song "Rapture" in 1982.

I can't believe that it took 30 posts for someone to mention Eazy -E-. Shameful.

I saw some nice mentions in here. I'd call regular commercial rap "old school" if it came out before The Chronic or doesn't hold influences from that album. As far as more underground stuff, stuff from the mid and late 90's is "old school" to me; say, anything from J5's EP ("Jayou") or old Arsonists joints or Haiku d'Etat or "Full Clip" or "Work" or damn... I'll mention these some other time.
I first heard early Sir Mix-a-Lot years and years after it came out and "Posse on Broadway" was always a standout track to me. To me it's extremely difficult to listen to a lot of old school stuff because it dated itself so quickly (cowbells, etc.)
These, however, have and always will stay fresh in my mind:
3rd Bass - "Pop Goes the Weasel"
A Tribe Called Quest - "Scenario" (my vote for the best song in rap, period)
A Tribe Called Quest - "Award Tour"
A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It"
Another Bad Creation - "Playground" (which I always preferred over the almost identical "Iesha")
Arrested Development - "Tennessee" (better than "Mr. Wendal" by 3 miles, 5 feet, and 2 inches)
Basehead - "Hair"
Biz Markie - "Just a Friend"
Das Efx - "They Want Efx"
Del Tha Funky Homosapien - "Mr. Dobalina"
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - "Summertime"
Eric B. & Rakim - "Don't Sweat the Technique" (one of the best beats ever)
Grandmaster Flash - "The Message" (worst Puffy 'remake' ever)
Ice Cube - "Today Was a Good Day"
Nas - "Halftime"
Nice & Smooth - "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow"
Paperboy - "Ditty"
Public Enemy - "Terminator X to the Edge of Panic" (that tea-kettle whistle that builds tension without ever releasing it)
Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight" (obligatory)
TLC - "What About Your Friends?" (not really rap)
US3 - "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)"
Young MC - "Roll with the Punches"
Young MC - "Pick Up the Pace"
