Reel Big Fish: Not entirely unknown. They had a minor radio hit back in 97, but most people don't realize they're still around. Used to play fun punk-ska music, but are now more of a rock band with horns.

RxBandits: This is the greatest band most people have never heard of, IMO. 2003's The Resignation was the best album of the year and already one of my all-time favorites. Again, used to be a ska band, but now do more experimenting with other types of music.

Zebrahead: Just a great band. Amazing live performers too.

Rise Against: Great up-and-coming punk band (and not your little sister's punk).

I'll suggest a few even though I haven't been into music as much lately as I used to... so some of these bands may be big now.

My Pal Trigger
Strike Anywhere
Grabass Charlestons
Gunmoll
Clairmel
Small Brown Bike
The Broadways
The Chinkees
Rise Against
These Arms Are Snakes

And not enough people listen to Bracket or Burning Airlines.

Hopefully everyone here has listened to Jawbox, Samiam, Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, and Jets To Brazil.
why don't you just put the entire prank records list on there. didn't small brown bike break up? hey rise against is on mtv now too.

Rock
Lennon Murphy One of the most promising singer-songwriters out there, in my opinion.
Aimee Allen Sung the theme song to Birds of Prey, if that means anything to anyone. Was dropped from her label before her album was released, but still recording.

Alternative
Rachael Yamagata Kind of a mix between PJ Harvey and Dido, if that makes any sense.

Goth Rock
Scarling

It's hard for me to do these lists, because I don't listen to the radio and most of the people I know that are into music know most, if not all, of the bands I know. Here are a couple I'm guessing some people might not have heard of though....

Carbon Leaf - american band with an irish folksy pop sound
Cat Power - great folk-inspired music, beautiful female vocals
Doves - big full rock sound
Elbow - similar to coldplay, but less poppy, darker, imo
Fiction Plane - big, catchy rock songs
Josh Rouse - great singer/songwriter
Jump, Little Children - i've judged people's musical taste based solely upon if they like the album 'Vertigo', i think it's THAT good of an album
Muse - 'Absolution' is what radiohead might sound like if they were a little less experimental
Sondre Lerche - great norwegian pop singer/songwriter
The Walkmen - I've heard comparisons to The Strokes, but I'd say The Walkmen are less polished and are superior lyrically

Lubricated Goat is still around and just released a CD of re-makes of all their old songs. Weird.

The Heroine Sheiks is Shannon from the Cows' latest band. They have two CDs out that are very good.

Katastrophy Wife is Kat (Babes In Toyland) Bjelland's latest band from England where she lives. Naturally it sounds like Babes In Toyland with a better rhythm section.

None of these bands can be called "workaholics" so they'll never be wildly famous, but you should still check them out because they're all terrific.
