Are there Metallica Remasters?

I have been listening to the AC/DC remasters and was curiuos if they ever did a Metallica remastering of their older albums.

Not yet.

And, Christ, AJFA could use a new mix.

Best sounding versions of Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning are the DCC gold discs (unfortunately now OOP) mastered by Mr. Golden Ears, Steve Hoffman. Don't expect any subsequent remasters to sound any better than these discs.

Are these the gold discs that go for about $100 on eBay?

When you say not yet, is there something planned or in the works?

I've already upgraded all of my records and cassettes to CD. Lars does not need any more of my money. (and he complains about fans stealing music when you have to buy the same album 2 or 3 times)

The "Black Album" is out on DVD-Audio, does that count?

You know this applies to every band right, not just Metallica.

Do you Metallica haters EVER give up?

You don't hear as much crying from other bands. I'm still a fan... just not nearly the fan I once was.

It would be nice to hear the bass guitar on the older albums, especially ...And Justice For All. The only times Cliff Burton (yeah I know he wasn't on that album) cut through the mix was if his bass had the distortion/wah effect on it and/or he was soloing. Other than that, it was the Lars and James show, with Kirk popping up for the solo.

I really hate how on the DVD-A of the Black Album, Lars shoots second.

Hate to say it, but yup, they are.
It's because of the confluence of DCC collectors and Metallica collectors. Keep your eyes open though, not everybody knows what they've got, and a couple of months ago a seller had them up, $25 BIN each.

$100? Master of Puppets gold DCC just sold for $27 in a regular 7 day auction, not buy it now.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'd think remasters would be coming out eventually.

The first 4 albums have been remasterd since 1994. If It has a Platinum Plus sticker, then that's it... also If not sure, just check inside the booklet, if it mentions the METALLICA club, then that's it.

if you can get your hands on the gold discs, its really amazing. the Cliff factor jumps way up, when I first heard these I nearly shit myself!

the black album DVD-audio is also fantastic, it was like hearing these tracks for the first time.

November 6 was my return date. I've just been relaxing a bit since then, so I didn't get on the net until today. It's good to be back and see U posting my Metallifriend.

Damn, I guess I should have grabbed those gold discs when I saw them for sale in stores. I was kind of sceptical about whether they really sounded better though, so I never bought them.

Understandably so, I can see how the whole "Gold CD" thing could seem like a bit of a gimmick. In fact some of the MFSL gold discs suffer from "smilie face" EQing (boosted bass and treble) so that people listening would say "wow, I never heard that part before!" or something like that. The problem is, the better your system is, the worse they sound. Hoffman masterings are all about natural sound, and the "breath of life". Believe the hype.
In fact, Hoffman and DCC label head have teamed up to do another series of gold redbook CDs for artists where the labels won't license the titles out for SACD: http://audiofidelity.net/

I had both those gold discs. Didn't notice a lick of sound improvement. I have one of those Bose cube systems.
