Basically, Miles Davis is the greatest artist ever!
I like Miles as a bandleader, but I think he was a comparatively weak trumpet player - great on ballads, but fairly lousy on uptempo numbers. Miles' real strength was in "schooling" young players and making them strong players and leaders in their own right - loot at what he did for Trane, "Cannonball" Adderly, Tony Williams...

Oh, and speaking of Miles & Tony Williams, et. al., lately the album that's been getting a lot of play at home and work is ESP, recorded with Miles' other great quintet:

Miles Davis, trumpet
Wayne Shorter, tenor sax
Herbie Hancock, piano
Ron Carter, bass
Tony Williams, drums

Other great albums by this band were Seven Steps to Heaven, Sorcerer and Miles Smiles - all wonderful examples of post-bop pre-fusion 60s jazz.
