Where does everyone buy "rare" music items?

Mainly looking for the best places (in selection and / or prices) to buy CD and vinyl singles and promos. Seems that Ebay is the only place I can find a lot of the promo items. And since most singles are imports, it's mosly UK sites.

Any thoughts?

i check out gemm alot, but find that ebay is a quicker and usually cheaper place. in any given week, one of the millions of worldwide users is bound to sell what you're looking for.

Ebay since it's conveneint, and Amoeba Music in Hollywood. In all my years of music shopping, Amoeba meets and exceeds my expectations in almost every genre. I find it VERY difficult to leave that store empty-handed.

You can try the Austin Record Convention. It's one of the largest if not the largest record shows in the U.S. I've only been once (1997) but it was quite an experience. There are dealers there with all sorts of music stuff, not just records/cds. There's probably lots of overpriced stuff but also likely some bargains that you might happen across.

I used to get my stuff from a local record shop... Even though they are becoming rare with all the chains making them close, try and find one and become friendly with the guys there

I've noticed places like Hot Topic and the like have some vinyl from time to time. Also Tower records. Not the most enjoyable places to spend a Sat afternoon, but if you're looking...

I've found some out-there stuff as well as rareties here. Picked up some sealed OOP Pork label CDs not too long ago.

Amoeba for me.

I wasn't so hot on gemm when I tried to use it. A friend of mine did use it over two years ago and still hasn't gotten the CD he ordered.

Agreed. Upon first glance, GEMM appears great with their huge quantity of scarce material, but for the pure bottom-line (delivery) they're awful.

Most of the stuff I bought is from eBay, the rest is from local record stores.
