For all you wrist slitting needs...

Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
K's Choice - Already There (hidden track at the end of All on the album Alomst Happy)
Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit (and pretty much everything else she did. Absolutely haunting voice filled with pain and despair)
Promise - Tracy Chapman
Kim Richey - Gravity
Eva Cassidy - Somewhere over the Rainbow
Alison Krauss - Ghost in This House

And to me the most depressing I have ever heard.
Alison Krauss - New Favorite

Oh yes, that's beautifully elegiac.

"The Living Years" - Mike & the Mechanics
"Visions of Johanna" (Biograph version) - Bob Dylan
A lot of classical music is quietly melancholy.

i tried to stay away from the songs about breaking up and just go with sad, slow, depressing in general kind of songs. if you want songs about lost love and all that kind of depressing stuff then i can add to the list.

I will sorta second this, but I would only go with his American albums because of the acoustic sets.

Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight

Dwight Yoakam - Two Doors Down
Dixie Chicks - Home

Counting Crows - a Long December
Counting Crows - Goodnight Elisabeth
Billy Bragg and Wilco - Remember the Mountain Bed
Beth Orton - This One's Gonna Bruise
Beth Nielsen Chapman - Sand and Water
Ben Folds Five - Don't Change your Plans
Barenaked Ladies - Break Your Heart

That's probably enough from me.

Penny Lane, are we twins? Oh and Remember the Mountain Bed is one of my all time favorite songs.

I will also go with Uncle Tupelo's Lilli Schull. You would not know how many times I have cried listening to that song. Simple song, but completely powerful.

Edited to throw in a vote for Whiskeytown's Dancing With The Women At The Bar

A few of my favorites were already mentioned, but here are some more.

Evanescence - Hello
Evanescence - Field of Dreams
Beatles - She's Leaving Home
Joydrop - Cocoon (This song always gets me... Probably the most depressing on the list for me.)
Garbage - Soldier Through This
Lennon Murphy - Thank You
Jack Off Jill - Vivica
Aimee Allen - Wasting My Youth & A Little Happiness (These might be very hard to come across, but well worth it)
Linkin Park - My December
Incubus - Warning
Mary Hopkin - Those Were the Days

That's more than enough from me... I personally prefer heavier/faster depressing songs, but most of the above fall in line with that slow, melodic "Mad World" vibe.

Another one.

Hallelujah - John Cale

I love Jeff Buckley's music, but he makes the song somewhat uplifting, IMO therefore does not have a spot in the "depressing" category.

Mad Season - Wake Up

Most depressing song I've ever heard. Especially since I first listened to it after Layne Staley died.
