i found it odd that they were on SNL, because their music sounded anything but mainstream and radio-friendly...
Take the following:
- Mainstream hip hop.
- Mainstream rap.
- John Coltrane.
- Prince.
- Classic '70s rock (think Frank Zappa, Steppenwolf, Steely Dan, Sly Stone).
- Recent rock (think Queens of the Stone Age).

Now mix it all together and you have N.E.R.D.

I prefer The Neptunes' produced Spymob (who also serve as N.E.R.D.'s backing band), but they're music is nothing like N.E.R.D.'s... instead they're more of a mix of classic '70s rock and mid-to-late '90s rock (think like Ben Folds, New Radicals, Feel, etc).

There comes a time when the hot thing of the moment overstays its welcome.

This is it for Pharrell Williams and Chad Huge aka N.E.R.D.

their first album was fun and amusing but this one is pure torture.

Hearing Pharrell's high-pitched voice screetch over and over just gets annoying. the first single "She..." is decent but that's about it.

I heard it, and hated it. They're trying to be some sort of alien rock group. In Search Of... is much better.

Yeah In Search Of was definitely better. This is just an awkward mess. Frankly, these guys (the Neptunes) have a lot of power in the music industry, so I'm sure N.E.R.D. will be around for a while. Either way, pretty big disapointment.

I have to disagree with the majority of people here. After some initial reservations, the albums is really starting to grow on me. I haven't heard the last few tracks but so far I am loving:

Jump, She Wants To Move, Breakout, Wonderful Place, Preservation, Drill Sargent & Maybe.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album. I'm not sure why there seems to be such a negative response to the sound. I am always happy to hear music that sounds different and doesn't easily fit into a genre. If anything, I think much of In Search Of.... seemed like it was trying to be something that the Neptunes weren't. Gansters with lots of attitude and the belief that they were god's gift to women. You get a little of that here but mostly they seem much more like....nerds.

As I said: In Search Of... is the mainstream album, Fly or Die is the experimental album.

With In Search Of..., their tracks were mostly hip-hop/rap oriented.
With Fly or Die, they're trying different things.

Chad and Pharrell have more talent that anyone in the "mainstream" music industry at the moment. For the fact that the two basically did almost everything on this album proves something. Sure, I would've loved if Spymob were doing the instruments, but I take what I get. This album is better than most of the shit being released currently to the masses.

I liked the hip-hop version of their first record (the "live" version nowhere near as much), but some of the junk on Clones and the first single from this have kept me from buying it.

Is this actually experimental or just experimental for hip-hop (a la The Love Below)?

Roots, I can see an argument there.

Outkast, no way in hell. I'm in the minority on them, with the exception of a few songs, I personally think they blow.

Have any of you heard the "She Wants To Move" remix with Common, Mos Def, De La, and Q-Tip? It's absolutely off the hook, and it's good to hear all of those rappers together on a track.

The first couple of listens to Fly or Die, I was a little disappointed becasue In Search Of... was my favorite album of that year and I had huge expectations for this. I though many of the hooks were homogenous and interchangable, but the more I listened, the more I got into it. Now, there are only 2 or 3 skippers on the whole disc and 3 or 4 absolute gems. The "bonus" track that kicks in about a minute after Chariots of Fire is a great, great song. I can see why many are complaining about this, but give it time and you might change your mind.

i liked the original album based on the old neptunes sound better.
i don't know... i can dig the music on this one,
but i just can't get into the vocals and lyrics aimed at young teens.

oh well, this album just isn't for me.

NERD cannot hold a candle to Outkast.

Try listening to all of their albums first, which I doubt you have.

So I saw N*E*R*D in concert tonight, and they put on one damn well show. Same goes for The Clipse and Black Eyed Peas. Can't say much for Spymob since they only played two songs.

While Chad was missing (where was he?), N*E*R*D played half of the tracks from In Search Of... and another half from Fly Or Die. Let me just say they were pretty damn good live, even if Pharrell was pissed off on how the Hard Rock's sound system sucks.

NERD cannot hold a candle to Outkast.
Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. I like N*E*R*D, I think Outkast is shit.

I hated Fly or Die when I first listened to it. HATED IT! Buy now I really like it. I think this disc demands a few listens before someone makes their final judgement. I think I may have been mad that they didn't give me another "In Search of...". The live version still gets played in my house on the regular.

I don't understand the Outkast and NERD comparisons. Yes, they both made a name in hip-hop then branched into more experimental sounds, but musically, you might as well compare Dr. Dre and Alan Jackson. The sound and feel is completely different.

I have to agree with most of you. I had to listen to the CD a few times. I don't care for all the songs, but most are good to my ears. You have to admit that N*E*R*D* is very different.

Also, technically N*E*R*D is:
Pharell Williams, Chad Hugo AND Shae Haley

THE NEPTUNES are:
Pharell Williams & Chad Hugo

This one?
Maybe Lyrics

[verse]
Love was the egg,
See...

And it was born in a cloud,
With silver lining.
Ah haaa.
But it broke.
I mean it hatched on the ground,
So time flew right by me.
And while I...

[hook]
I know you thought your life was gon' be easy,
When you didn't call.
You found that you were wrong, haha.
See I know you thought your life was gon' be easy.
You thought you had it all,
But you found that you were wrong.

[chorus - Pharrell/Lenny Kravitz]
See maybe,
There was something wrong,
And you weren't telling me, no, ohh.

See, see maybe,
The laugh's on me,
And life was telling me a joke, ohh/joke.

[verse]
Well they say,
If something's yours,
And you let it go,
If it comes back to you,
It was yours all along.
Well I let you go,
Along with those lies from you.
I wonder what else lies in you,
Or did the lies just eat it gone?

See...
[hook]

[chorus]

[verse]
Babe! Yo.
Hold it now!
Is y'all there? Haha.
How you feeling right now?
Yeah me too.
Hey yea!

Uh,
Babe!

Hold it now!
Y'all alright?
See,
Do you remember,
What's it's like to,
Wake up in,
Her love nest?
Get it...love nest? Haha.

And now she's gone!
Gone,
Gone!
Gone.

At which point, you realize,
Life is but a joke,
And it laugh's on you.
It's funny right?
Babe!
If not, check HERE [Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! MAD Pop-ups!]
