Top Producers Thread
Who are yr favorite producers or who is really on top of The Game? It's easy to remember, or at least give more credit to, the MC and forget about the knob-twiddlers, etc.
Danger Mouse is my current favorite, mainly because of Ghetto Pop Life since The Grey Album stumbled in parts. But his crate-digging pays off in big ways -- unlike, say, MF Doom who gets some cool samples but sounds a little murky. And even though I've whittled The Grey Album down to some select tracks, he's forward-thinking as hell. The Timbaland/Missy tag-team continues to burn even though my roomie says "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" is typical Tim-fare. That futurismo schtick has yet to get old in my opinion. DJ Premier still stood tall on The Ownerz -- I don't know when this guy'll fade out. I want to hear more from Joe Beats (Non-Prophets) and 9th Wonder is on the fence for me.
Anyway, I would say The Neptunes but, to quote Jon Dale, "The Neptunes are a little too everywhere to be anywhere." "Change Clothes" and "Allure" are 2 of 3 tracks I typically skip over when walking with The Black Album. IMO, the last really great thing they did was "Milkshake."

That Voice article was really good, though I don't know exactly who she is referencing here: "And yes—I discount your beats if your MC is a jerk who asks a woman to do anything against her will, including but not limited to adjusting her purple Lycra bicycle shorts?"

I had originally intended this to be a discussion of hip-hop producers, but since rock workers have already been mentioned -- Jon McEntire and Jim O'Rourke.

In addition to those already mentioned, Prince Paul's my favorite hip-hop producer. RJD2 is great, as well.
It's great to have Rick Rubin back producing hip-hop on Jay-Z's "99 Problems." I wish he'd do a full album for someone.
