This Week's CDs (3/15-19)
The Coral - Magic & Medicine
The Coral - Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker
Just Jack - The Outer Marker
Grandaddy - Under the Western Freeway
Helmet - Unsung (The Best of Helmet)
Del tha Funkee Homosapien - B-Boy Handbook (The Elektra Years)
Jawbreaker - Dear You
QOTD: Who are some bands you used to love and now dislike and why?
AOTD: Realized yesterday that I've grown to really dislike a few of my (formerly) favorite bands when I heard that Nine Inch Nails and the Beastie Boys were releasing new discs.
Nine Inch Nails - Trent's lyrics and music sound so profound when you're a middle class high school/college kid pissed off at nothing in particular. Now that I'm older, his stuff sounds so incredibly shallow and trite. Plus, it's been a long, long time since I've listened to a disc that's aged as badly as Pretty Hate Machine.
Beastie Boys - I do still think that Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head are great albums. However, Ill Communication doesn't sound too good on further listens (with the exception of Sabotage and Sure Shot, which will always be good songs) and Hello Nasty is pretty terrible. These guys ran out of good ideas a while ago and need to hang it up.

Alice Peacock - s/t
Spoon - Kill The Moonlight
Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
R.E.M. - In Time (Best of... Ltd Ed. w/ B-Sides)
AOTD: Hmmm... tough question. Some candidates:
-- "Weird Al" Yankovic: I don't hate him, but this was my first "favorite artist" (20 years ago, yes, I'm geeky), and I don't have any of his albums now, so clearly my tastes have changed. I just don't need much "Weird Al" in my life.
-- Counting Crows: For me, a classic "one album is enough" band. It's not that I dislike them, but they're a band that I only need one album from because their subsequent albums don't really do anything different for me.
In general, my musical tastes change gradually, and while I don't listen much to Freedy Johnston's This Perfect World (a CD I nearly wore out listening to 10 years ago) anymore, it's not because I think it's a bad album or because his work since hasn't quite matched the clarity of that (or its predecessor, Can You Fly).
I always listened to "Pretty Hate Machine" for the noise; once I got tired of that, I stopped listening to NIN.

Velvet Underground - "Loaded"
Gang of Four - "Solid Gold"
Labradford - s/t
To Rococo Rot - whatever the new one is called
Q of the D:
Screeching Weasel - one of my favorite bands from my high school years, but I got tired of the repetitive pop-punk sound (and the fact that they really started to suck on their last few albums)
Face to Face - same deal...moved on to different genres and bands

Telefon Tel Aviv - Map of what is Effortless
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality
Melvins - Houdini
AOTD:
Other than my childish vices such as MC Hammer and Michael Jackson, I guess the closest thing to "outgrowing" a band, so to speak, for me was Korn. I really liked them for the first and second records, and some of the third. I was going through that angsty teen thing at the same time, so it fit perfectly. Now they are incredibly cliched and outdated. I still listen to the first 2 records on occassion, but I don't really dig the newer ones.
I still love NIN though!

Animal Collective, Sung Tongs
Animal Collective, Here Comes the Indian
CocoRosie, La Maison de Mon Rêve
Scissor Sisters, Scissor Sisters
Fennesz, Venice
Melt Banana, Cell-Scape
Pere Ubu, Dub Housing
TV on the Radio, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Weird War, If You Can't Beat 'em, Bite 'em
AoTD: I listened to a lot of Hopeless Recs punk in high school and I guess I just became less angry. One band that I've been growing away from is Radiohead. I still like OK Computer and Kid A, but if they broke up tomorrow I wouldn't really care. As petty as it sounds, I think it has as much to do with Hail to the Thief being a complete stinker as it does with their occasionally rabid fanbase.

Fallow - What do you think of the TV on the Radio CD? I've got the EP and really like it. I thought about buying the CD but heard from a friend that the full length wears out its welcome way too quickly...said they were a better EP/singles band than an album band. Wanted to get a bit more opinion on the disc before I spend cash on it (non-Pitchfork related opinion that is).

-If you've heard enough of the Counting Crows from their first album, you're missing some amazing music.
-The one band that doesn't do it for me anymore is Phish. Got into then in 93, and as soon as they went funk, it all went downhill. The nail in the coffin was Farmhouse, Jibboo, Sand, and Twist Around, all on the SAME album. Plus each of those songs SUCK live. Esp the 20 min Sand or Jibboo. I absolutely loathe this band now.

I think the TV on the Radio is absolutely brilliant. I've been listening to it for over a month now and I still don't think it has worn out its welcome. For some reason I feel like all the praise for Young Liars should be on DYBTB and all the disregard for DYBTB should be on Young Liars. Apart from "Sattelite" and "Staring at the Sun," I thought the EP was only promising. DYBTB is its fulfilment.
Keep in mind that I have a tendency to rave.

Tv on the Radio- Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
Sufjan Stevens- Seven Swans
Palace Music- Viva Last Blues
Bonnie "Prince" BIlly- I See A Darkness
American Music Club- Mercury
Franz Ferdinand- s/t
The TV on the Radio album is very nice. It is a little bit different than the EP, but in a good way. The song 'Dreams' alone tops anything on Young Liars in my opinion.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - live EP (import single)
Jet - single with live cuts (import single)
The Rapture - Live from the Bowery Ballroom (import single)
X-ray #10 - various artists
Uncut - March issue CD
Keane - Somewhere Only We Know (single) - I really am impressed with this band and this song, it comes across as a cross between a Ben Fold's ballad and Coldplay
Fallow - what do you think of the Scissor Sisters album?
Did you make it to Monday nights' British Sea Power show at the Black Cat?

re: Scissor Sisters. The highs are really high and the lows are really low. A couple of the tracks are perfect ("Electrobix," "Someone to Touch ("How Many Times)," and "Music is the Victim") and some of them really fall off ("Filthy and Gorgeous" & "Bicycling with the Devil"), but I stay entertained for the duration of the album -- even if it is humor that will wear off eventually. I definitely suggest the single: Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" made Bee-Gee grab-ass fest. I grudgingly give the CD two thumbs up.
Unfortunately, I did not make it to British Sea Power on Monday, did you? The buddy I was going with decided that she couldn't fork out the money and I need to save cash for this streak of incredible shows coming up at the end of the month. But I'm seeing, and hopefully partying with, Rahzel (beatboxer for The Roots) tonight. I doubt that he'll want to kick it with a bunch of college kids, though.

nah, didn't make it to the BSP show, had a wild and crazy time up in NYC over the weekend was completely knackered by Monday.
Thanks for the thumbs up the CD single of the Scissor Sisters' 'Comfortably Numb' - gonna add it that to my Amazon.co.uk order later this week.
Just out of curiousity, where do you get your CD's?

One decent local record store in Fredericksburg, 2 good record stores in Williamsburg and Richmond, one decent record store in Newport News, and one massive run on Earwax (Williamsburg area of Brooklyn) two weeks ago. I also use Insound, Forced Exposure, Gemm, and record label sites to order from the inner-nerd. I'm also not above p2p, though I am above burning CDs. After seeing an original vinyl copy of This Heat's Deceit on eBay, I'll probably start frequenting that as well (I don't know how to work it). If you know of some good places in DC, I will be indebted to you.
What'd you do in NYC? I wanted to catch a show while I was there, but ended up patronizing the clothing and book stores with the missus.

. Smash Records and CD Depot in Georgetown are average at best. Olssons Books and Records (where I used to work) is very good - imports and dance music are more available at the Dupont store. Store transfers are available as is special ordering of domestic albums. I actually went up to NYC for the Big East games. Over a course of five days saw three games, one play: "Bug" and eight movies - whew! If I played my cards right I could have seen British Sea Power at the Bowery Ballroom last Saturday night, but it was sold out.
