One person's trash is another's treasure, and vice versa.

I also agree with the above poster that age isn't likely to change one's tastes to much. Maybe for those who are hardcore into music (i.e. listen all the time, and play music on their own).

But for more casual fans like myself that just throw on a CD while in the car or office and catch a couple concerts a year, I don't think taste is likely to change much. I'm 25 now and listen to more or less the same stuff I did 10 years ago (grunge, alternative, punk, metal, etc.).

Eh, I disagree with that sentiment. I'm 20 and have been listening to Sigur Ros since I was 17 or 18.
That's why I said most not all. There are always exceptions. Those exceptions are what makes life interesting.

While it sounds snobbish, it is true that certain music is better appreciated at a later stage in life. I know I appreciate Rush on so many more levels now than back when I was a teenager/college student.

That said, I agree that Sigur Ros is pretty bad. I tried the sample tracks from Amazon.com and was amazed that something so pointless could hold anybody's fascination.
It's a thread of polar opposites! yeah

I liked Rush in high school (and before). Got older and found their schtick wanting. Don't hate Rush, but I'd much prefer something like Sigur Ros any day of the week.

I completely agree with that. I bought MBV's "Isn't Anything" and Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation" when I was 15 in 1988. I loved both then and the passing years have only increased my appreciation. I still pull out stuff I loved as a teenager (Big Black, Descendents, Roxy Music etc.) and find it relevent to my current suburban/corporate/father life. That's what's unique about truly great art, it's appeal is much broader than mearly passable stuff.

Besides, college rock (75% shit, 25% good) is called that for a reason. Really, Sigur Ros and similar bands exist because of my demographic, or it helps significantly.
I'll agree that college rock is labled that because it appeals mainly to pretentious 21 year olds with Death Cab for Cutie t-shirts (I'm guilty as charged, BTW). However, that doesn't mean 30-year- old father-of-twos like me don't go out and buy the latest M83 release...

Oh, I don't mean to imply that older generations don't appreciate music that falls under the "college rock" supra-umbrella. I was just pointing out that a large base of support for these groups comes from the 18-21 range, thus the age-as-"better taste" argument doesn't necessarily work. I mean, I heard about Sigur Ros from a VH-1 news special, not the campus radio or blog.

And I definitely believe that 30 year old Dad's would buy M83: not only does it appeal to the MBV fans but poor college students can't drop that much ca$h for one CD.
