Ok, not as impressively written as how I originally wrote it, but still...
Checked out the websites... Man, it's been some time. I'm turning 30 on Sunday, and I remember that video growing up. I'm starting to feel my age. :gulp:
Anyway, I was thinking of some other great break-up songs, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned Naked Eyes' (I know it was originally sung by at least one other artists, and I think two, before) "Always Something There To Remind Me."
That to me is a must-have in any break-up song compilation.

There's a 2 CD set called "Classic MTV Class of 1983," and it has "Goodbye To You" and "Always Something There to Remind Me." (Of course, "Goodbye To You" was actually from 1982.)
I still recommend Patty Smyth's "Greatest Hits Featuring Scandal." It's a wonderful CD.

Since I just watched a few episodes of The Adventures of Pete and Pete....
"Everywhere" by Polaris
And I'd also like to be another one to add that Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" is the definitive break-up album.

didn't see greg kihn band - "the breakup song (they don't write 'em like that)" on here yet. agree with fleetwood mac - "go your own way" and abba - "knowing me, knowing you" because they were sooo autobiographical for the artists!

Well personally I see acoustic as being the best songs for break ups, so a few suggestions.
Anything by Dashboard Confessional
Yellowcard - Cigarette
Fallout Boy - Sugar we're going down
All American Rejects - It Ends Tonight
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Live - Overcome
Matchbook Romance - Tiger Lilly
****BEST*** Snow Patrol - Run
I'll end there since I have many songs that I have not looked at yet.

The song is by Tony Rich...not Babyface, and the song is called "nOBODY kNOWS". The song also isn't even about a breakup, it was actually written about his father, whom he had a very close relationship with, until he died just before recording was to begin on Tony's debut album "Words". Tony, while in the studio , wanted to pay tribute to his dad, and say a proper goodbye to him. The song is basically(as Tony has said) everything he wanted to tell his dad, before he died. Great song!

Seriously now, Pearl Jam's "Black" is a really beautiful song.
On this part:
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine"
The way Eddie sings it, man, I still get cringe from emotion after nearly 15 years.

You can make a whole CD of just Elvis Costello songs
Alison
I Want You
Indoor Fireworks
I Hope Your Happy Now
Lipstick Vogue
Needle Time
Two Little Hitlers
Blue Chair
Everyday I Write the Book
So Like Candy
Tonight the Bottle Let me Down
Deep, Dark, Truthful Mirror
Stranger in the House
Accidents Will Happen
There are probably 20 more in his catalog that are just as good.
