"Cat's in the Cradle" is a good one, as is that last part of Pearl Jam's "Black" (the lyrics are terrific):

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?

The only one that does it for me every time, though, is the one I hear at almost every wedding during the father/daughter dance - Butterfly Kisses (probably because I have a 17-month-old daughter). Prior to her being born, I never really paid attention to the lyrics, and thus, the song never really did anything for me until recently as I now watch her grow up:

Bob Carlisle
Butterfly Kisses

There's two things I know for sure.
She was sent here from heaven, and she’s daddy’s little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night,
She talks to Jesus, and I close my eyes.
And I thank God for all the joy in my life, But most of all...
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer.
Stickin’ little white flowers all up in her hair.
"Walk beside the pony daddy, it’s my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, daddy, but I sure tried."
Oh, with all that I’ve done wrong, I must have done something right.
To deserve a hug every morning, and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet sixteen today.
She’s looking like her momma a little more every day.
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and makeup, from ribbons and curls.
Trying her wings in a great big world. But I remember...

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer.
Stickin’ little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you daddy, but if you don’t mind,
I’m only going to kiss you on cheek this time."
With all that I’ve done wrong, I must have done something right.
To deserve a hug every morning, and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precise time.
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly, spread your wings and fly.

She’ll change her name today.
She’ll make a promise, and I’ll give her away.
Standing in the bride room just staring at her.
She asked me what I’m thinking, and I said, "I’m not sure,
I just feel like I’m losing my baby girl."
Then she leaned over... and gave me...

Butterfly kisses, with her mama there.
Stickin’ little white flowers all up in her hair.
"Walk me down the aisle daddy, it’s just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty daddy?" "Daddy don’t cry."
With all that I’ve done wrong, I must have done something right.
To deserve a hug every morning, and butterfly kisses.
I couldn’t ask God for more, man, this is what love is.
I know I’ve gotta let her go, but I’ll always remember.
Every hug in the morning, and butterfly kisses...

And kicking and screaming against every fiber in my being, that one does the same thing for me.

Like you, I have a daughter, and have heard it at daddy/daughter dances when we used to go when she was younger. She's just going into high school now, and I know if I heard it right now I'd get all misty.

Man, I'm such a wimp when it comes to stuff like that. It's my secret shame.

I don't think I've heard that song before, but I have done butterfly kisses with my daughter.

I don't always get choked up when I hear these songs, but the following have done it to me in the past at least once...

"Landslide" (the Fleetwood Mac classic...beautiful song done by anyone, but when it's done solo piano by Tori Amos, I almost always get a bit misty)

"More Than He Could Give" by Jackopierce (it's a song about a boy who is dying and whose mother wants nothing more than for "her son to live"...I'm tearing up right now just thinking about that song)

"You're Missing" by Bruce Springsteen (considering this song came out so soon after 9/11, I couldn't hear it for months without crying)

"If I Had Only Known" by Reba McEntire (this song came out several years ago after several of her bandmates and crew were killed in a plane crash)

"Life By The Drop" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (it's a song that's primarily concerned about his finally beating alcoholism and cleaning his life up...which was released after he died...so it reminds me of how sad it is that we lost him so young)

OK, before I get too depressed, I must say that almost anything off that Tenacious D record makes me cry with laughter!

Buford T Pusser asked
Does anyone remember on the Andy Griffith Show when the Darlings play a song that always makes Charlene Darling cry? What was it called? I was thinking "Salty Dog".
The Darlings did play "Salty Dog", but that wasn't a song that made Charlene cry.

Briscoe would suggest a song, and Charlene would request that they not play it because "that one" made her cry, and then they would play something else.

Here are some songs that Charlene claimed made her cry:

Slimy River Bottom
Never Hit Your Grandma with a Great Big Stick
Boil Them Cabbage Down

Hand in Glove by The Smiths is probably up there. Take This Longing by Leonard Cohen. There's probably about 30 Smiths songs that fit. Sparklehorse - Saint Mary, too. Up the Junction by Squeeze for sure....

Lots of songs can make me cry, but no joke, the one that really upsets me most is Go West. Either version, but probably the Pet Shop Boys most... It plays right into the whole "all my best friends are dead from AIDS" vibe I had going in the 90s...

One line in Comfortable Numb does it for me everytime. "I turn to look but it was gone. The child is grown. The dream is gone."

A few.. but a song I heard for the first time today choked me up:

Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens

Golden rod and the 4-H stone
The things I brought you
When I found out you had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone
And he drove his car to the Navy yard
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning through the window shade
When the light pressed up against your shoulder blade
I could see what you were reading

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications you could do without
When I kissed you on the mouth

Tuesday night at the bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael's house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

Oh the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

Sunday night when I cleaned the house
I find the card where you wrote it out
With the pictures of your mother

On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications when I see his face
In the morning in the window

Oh the glory when he took our place
But he took my shoulders and he shook my face
And he takes and he takes and he takes

Jeez, I was flipping through the radio stations on my way home from work last night and caught the end of this one (a second song that REALLY does it for me - this is starting to depress me):

"Christmas Shoes" by Newsong

It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Tryin to buy that last gift or two
Not really in the Christmas mood

Standin right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

"Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight"

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
And the, cashier said "Son, there's not enough here."
He searched his pockets franticly
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said "Mama made Christmas good at our house
Most years she just did without
Tell me, sir, what am I gonna do?
Somehow I've gotta buy her these Christmas shoes"

So I laid the money down
I just had to help him out
And I'll never forget the look on his face
When he said "Mama's gonna look so great"

"Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight."

I knew I caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy to remind me
What Christmas is all about

"Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight"

Even though it's set at Christmas time, I hear this one throughout the year - it must be a fairly new song, however, because I've only heard it within the past year or two.

Anyway, it's tough to get the full impact of this song (and "Butterfly Kisses" for that matter) by just reading the lyrics - putting them together with the music really helps with the emotional impact that they elicit. Check out the corresponding audio clips and/or downloads online to see what I mean.

Lately, Fix You - Coldplay.

Someone mentioned The Smiths - Hand in Glove, but I've gotten choked up by How Soon Is Now and That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore.

yeah, those two as well. I could go on for days listing the Smiths' songs that have that effect on me. I think it also had to do with the shit that was going on at the time. I was studying abroad and The Cure & The Smiths were basically the soundtrack of my trip.

Opeth's "Credence" has lately been getting me.

Is it part of that recent hour-long performance that airs on Comedy Central? I keep mising it.

If so, I'll definitely have to look for the next time it airs.

Re: What songs make you choke up/cry?

I was going to start a new thread but decided to necro-revive an older one instead.

Music that makes me cry:

Debussy's "Clair de lune" - Don't know why but the second this tune starts, I well up.

Glenn Miller "Moonlight Serenade" - This one because it reminds me of my Grandfather who use to listen to oldies while driving me around town looking for comic books.

The Cranberries "Linger" - A girl broke my heart when this song came out and it was on the radio all the fucking time. Tho I don't think about her anymore, the song must have absorbed all that emotion because I get into a funk whenever I hear it.

Christina Aguilera "Beautiful" - Not an Aguilera fan but she really nails this song and it stirs something in my soul.

John & Yoko's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - This is the reason why I thought of this kind of thread. I hear this song and I instantly start thinking about what kind of year I had and get all misty-eyed. Was it better than last year? Worse?

Virtually any Christmas song makes me tear up. I'm one of those guys who gets moody over the Winter holidays.

Re: What songs make you choke up/cry?

Not really "crying", but songs that "hit home" with me:

Tom Petty - "King's Highway" - after I proposed to my wife, we were driving down the road and this song came on the radio. The lyrics are so simple and just about perfect. Whenever I hear it, it reminds me of that moment.

Bruce Springsteen - "Candy's Room" - a perfect portrait of unattainable love, longing and desperation. It has no personal association for me, but it's an undeniably moving song.

Joy Division - "Atrocity Exhibition" - I went through some dark times in my early twenties. Some really awful stuff happened and I didn't react well. This song resonated with me at that time and still reminds me of those bad days.

The Cure - "Funeral Party" - ridiculously, naively goth and irritatingly teenager-ish, sure. That pretty much defined me at age 17 and this song was my anthem. Hearing it now is like a blast of nostalgia bringing back my old girfriend, some crazy stuff we did together and how it made me feel at the time. It brings me right back to the summer of 1991 and the dumb kid I was. It's a very happy memory but bittersweet.

The Flying Burrito Brothers version of "Dark End of the Street" - beautifully captures illicit love and the conflicting guilt/longing of cheating. The older I get the wiser this song sounds. Not that I would cheat. Gram's voice is just pleading on this song.

And lastly, this one seems a bit cheesy but bear with me:
"Only the Young" by Journey. I saw a documentary (I think a "Behind the Music", but regardless...) about this band and the story behind this song is pretty amazing. When it had just been recorded, they got a request from a young boy in the final stages of cystic fibrosis to meet him. They brought along a demo tape of the song and the sick boy was the first one outside of the band to hear the song. They put headphones on him and played the song and his face lit up. I think about that boy who hadn't grown beyond Journey and think of this song (which to be fair is probably the most moving thing they ever wrote) and it kills me to think of the development he missed out on, sitting there in the stupid 1980s listening to this Journey song... and what it must have meant to him. If there's one disease I wish I could instantly eradicate it's cystic fibrosis, it only affects kids and it's a slow tortorous way to live and die. This has been a major concern of mine for years and this song reminds me of the struggles those kids face every day.
