Is "Hey Ya!" the new "All Star"?

After Smash Mouth plagued this world with "All Star" it seemed like every advertisement for a product or tv show or sporting event was under some demonic contractual obligation to force it down our throats. Now it seems the contract has run out, but a new rule is in place: all advertisement's must work OutKast's "Hey Ya!" into everything. Thankfully OutKast doesn't suck, so there's at least that, but damn, does it have to be used in everything? I used to like the song, but now I'm not so sure.

What has used it? I've seen no commercials that use it (granted, I don't watch much TV).

And gawd, I hope it doesn't become the next "All Star."

sararekuforever 01-18-04 05:30 PM

I have no shining love for this song. "Shake it like a polaroid picture" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

It's no where near as bad as "Milkshake"..which I had the horror of hearing just yesterday

das Monkey 01-18-04 05:30 PM

You serious? It's everywhere, from car commercials to movie trailers. It has become the prevalent "light-hearted segue" music. It's also the prevalent "highlight film" music. Watch any promo for football or basketball, and they're mixing it in with big plays and crowd footage. Mostly, it's being used for network promotion of their own programming: sports, specials, etc.

It is also in the ad for 50 first dates. We can only hope Shrek 2 is so lucky.

Whatever, they're laughing all the way to the bank. Smashmouth made a ton, and Outkast surely is raking in some ridiculous dough this year.

davidlynchfan 01-18-04 06:01 PM

Yes,I just hear that friggin' song everywhere!
If I can have it my way-Shake it like a Salt-Shaker! would be played all over commercialized confines.

fallow 01-18-04 06:10 PM

Now I don't know how they simulate shaking a salt shaker, but I can't help but think s'just a little too close to another kind of uuuh hand motion.

They'd better save some of it, though. Having a massively overplayed song like this can kill your career in the long run (not always, Queen for one managed to outlast it, but it's usually the kiss of death).

I noticed with that Mambo #5 song, the guy seemed to realize this might be his one big hit, at least based on how thoroughly he pimped the song out (for example, the Disney version of the song).

You make it sound as if Outkast has just released their sophomore album. They've been around since 1991, and have had numerous hits, and all albums have gone platinum+.

Is Hey Ya a gay song? No. So it's not the new allstar.

Only posting to say that a) I think you'd be surprised at the number of people here who actually like "All Star" (yes, I'm one of the them), and b) I haven't actually heard the song ("Hey Ya!") promoting anything yet. Of course, considering its subject matter, I think its long-term prospects may be more diminished...

:hscratch:

Explain this, please..

the aftermath 01-19-04 02:04 PM

"Hey Ya" will not destroy Outkast's career because unlike Smash Mouth they actually have talent.

Frank TJ Mackey 01-19-04 06:59 PM

Smashmouth and Outkast shouldn't even be used in
the same sentence.

Blasphemy I tell you!! :)

Drexl 01-19-04 07:45 PM

We won't know for a few more years.

tboogie 01-19-04 08:25 PM

How's the rest of Outkast's CD? I absolutely can't stand "Hey Ya."

What exactly is a gay song?

Hiro11 01-19-04 10:11 PM

IMO, it's one of the best singles I've heard in a long, long time. Am I sick to death of it? Absolutely. Do I think it's pure genius? Absolutely.

Also, no one puts OutKast, who has made at least 4 classic albums, on a par with Smashmouth, who... does not.

Thankfully OutKast doesn't suck

For absolute clarity, I would never dream of comparing these two bands. My comparison is simply based on the oversaturation of these two particular songs. Carry on ... ;)

This is one of the good points of not watching any television, 5 months later and I still love the song.

I consciously limit my exposure to commercial radio and music videos for the same reasons.

Allstar, I thought I made that clear.

:hscratch: ...still wondering how Queen "managed to outlast it"..
