Cruelty and The Beast was intensely gothic, based on Countess Elizabeth Bathory. (I just love the cue where the woman's faking an orgasm.) It's like a intense horror film, only the visualisation provided by the instruments are perfect and in the mind. Danny is a brilliant lyricist also (one of the best in any genre of music) and is very visual with his words.
...but, the rest of the albums, to me, just sound plain. My favourite song of theirs is Malice Through the Looking Glass from Dusk... and Her Embrace.

I have Cruelty and the Beast and I used to think it was decent but when I tried to listen to it again recently I absolutly loathed it. I like the whole gothic approach to the band but the music itself it just garbage and the lyrics are just as worse. BTW, I'm a huge metal fan.
Oh but their cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name is actually pretty cool.

The music sometimes is good, but the guy's voice is too annoying for me. I own "Dusk and her Embrace" because it's the only album I almost completely like. I think the best thing they ever did was the cover of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

guess i'll be the first to chime in here with a pro vote for CoF.
Dani's voice can be kinda grating, but I like the dynamics/theatrics that it brings to the music. Like pretty much all of the other extreme metal acts, first impressions can be decieving for these guys. (I didn't really like them on the first listen, either) Their sound is incredibly dense, and it takes several listens to really get what they're doing.
As a couple others have said, their music is really like listening to the soundtrack of an intense horror film.
Dusk & Her Embrace and Midian are my two favorite cds. Saw them headline here in Minneapolis just before Thanksgiving...fantastic show. Everyone was spot on (including the vocals).
They're definitely not for everyone, but I, for one, really enjoy their stuff.
Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of the best covers I've heard...True enough to the original song to make it recognizable, but it also definitely has the stamp of CoF's sound on it, too.
