Favorite Concert Film

So what's your favorite concert film?

wendersfan 12-12-03 03:54 PM

I voted for The Last Waltz, but it has an unfair advantage because it has so many different performers, almost all of whom are legends.

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart isn't really a concert film. There's probably less than 20 minutes of concert footage in the film, total. Two films you should have included are The Song Remains the Same (which is the only movie I ever fell asleep during and walked out in the middle of), and The Cure In Orange.

deadlax 12-12-03 03:58 PM

Song Remains the Same is and always has been shit. Rattle and Hum isn't really a concert film either per se, but is great as well. I couldn't leave them off. Cure is a good choice, people can write that in.

Well obviously I think that, since it put me to sleep and once I woke up I left! I've never liked Led Zeppelin, so I always kind of assumed the movie wasn't so bad and it was just me.

My favorite is probably Christian Death - Live or maybe Skinny Puppy's - Ain't It Dead Yet?. I have also enjoyed over the years REMs Tourfilm, Pavement - Slow Century and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

Other -- Rolling Stones -- Gimme Shelter

These aren't really concert films listed per se...mostly just rock documentaries. Tough choice though...so many good films.

Practically tied between Gimme Shelter, Stop Making Sense and The Last Waltz. Eventually chose Gimme Shelter though.

For those who are fans of rock docs, 270 Miles From Graceland - Live from Bonnaroo 2003 is a great documentary (so much better than last year's version). Great mix of live performances and interviews with artists and concert-goers. Here's the tracklisting of live performances...

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - Talkatif
Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals - Temporary Remedy
Warren Haynes - Beautifully Broken
The Polyphonic Spree - It's the Sun
Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon - William Powell
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Sleeper
Widespread Panic - Papa Johnny Road
Medeski Martin and Wood - Uninvisible
My Morning Jacket - Lowdown
Robert Randolph & the Family Band - I Need More Love
Jack Johnson - Mud Football
Tortoise - Tin Cans & Twine
Nickel Creek - I Should've Known Better
Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather
The Roots - You Got Me
The Dead - Sugar Magnolia
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1
North Mississippi Allstars - Be So Glad
Yonder Mountain String Band - Mother's Only Son
Ben Kweller - Walk On Me
The Allman Brothers Band - Desdemona
James Brown - I Feel Good
Scratch - Freestyle

Gimme Shelter - The Stones in their prime is as good as it gets!

nazz 12-13-03 12:55 AM

Other - Concert For George

Ergyu 12-13-03 03:06 AM

Gonna have to go with Nine Inch Nails. If it weren't there it would have been Pink Floyd though.

Michael Corvin 12-13-03 10:26 AM

other

Metallica - Cunning Stunts
The video and audio quality is better than most movies released. Plus they were one of the first to actually use the angle button on the dvd player. Not to mention the song selection is excellent, having being recorded prior to Re-Load, Garage, Inc., S&M, and St. Anger.

Jason 12-13-03 10:40 AM

Iron Maiden - Live After Death

Scream for me Long Beach!!

And Rush - Exit Stage Left.

Rivero 12-13-03 12:00 PM

Gimme Shelter- Rollong Stones

Without question:

Monterey Pop Festival/Jimmy Plays Monterey/Shake! Ottis at Monterey all found on the Complete Monterey Pop Festival: Criterion Collection

BTW, why isn't this and Woodstock on the poll?

BTW, why isn't this and Woodstock on the poll?
Cause I made the poll, and while I own both discs, I ****ing hate hippies. No love from me. I just don't love these discs as much as some of the others. However, you can write that in, which is why I asked for specific titles, and I will keep score.

Rogue588 12-13-03 02:11 PM

I would've gone with NIN, had it not been for Other.

While it's not necessarily a straightforward "concert" film, I think it's Prince's - Sign 'O' the Times.

Saxofonix 12-13-03 09:15 PM

Rammstein - Live Aus Berlin.

I'm not a great fan of this genre of music .. but their performance and stage-show is incredible.

MFRONE 12-13-03 10:01 PM

Speaking of Ben Harper, his movie Pleasure and Pain is excellent.

I'm surprised that Phish's "Heartbreak Motel" isn't a choice. Even though I don't like the band, it's a pretty good film.

deadlax 12-14-03 02:25 PM

ya i own bittersweet motel, but it's not quite on the level of 95% of most concert films.
