I'll probably be in the minority by saying this, but if her idea of punk is Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne and other MTV bands, why not get her music/books she'll end up actually liking?

I'm not saying that she'll most definitely hate the suggestions listed, but she probably won't like them and you'll be wasting your money. If she likes Good Charlotte I'd be very surprised if she ended up liking more than a couple of the bands (Ramones, Clash, Stiff Little Fingers) listed.

Yeah, but you can't blame him for trying to expand her horizons. That boxed set might be the way to go, that's a bunch of killer tracks (most of which I own the entire album they're on and can verify they picked the right ones...)

I have a 12 yr old daughter who lives for Good Charlotte, and somehow I have been able to actually broaden her musical world with The Ramones, Dead Milkmen, Lene Lovich, The Jam, etc.

Yeah, when my little brother was 12, I caught him listening to Pink Floyd. I immediately threw that disc out of the player and put in some Daniel Johnston and Beat Happening. Changed his life!

I'm telling you: go to any bookstore and just flip through "Please Kill Me". Incredible book! Tons of stories as told by the people who lived it. Funny to see how they contradict each other at times. You get different people's perspectives on the same story. I've read it 3 times and am ready to give it another read!

"We've Got the Neutron Bomb" is basically the LA version of "Please Kill Me". Good, but not great.

Go on ebay or your local indie store and track down some back issues of Flipside while you're at it too!

I cut my teeth on Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth and the Ramones and I love "Dark Side of the Moon". To each his own, I guess.
